Ummmmm.... hi! I'm still alive! If you thought that all of the personal statement writing and PROcrastination and midterms and failed attempts at romance and so on had finally done me in, you were sorely mistaken.
No, I am alive, and here is a non-exhaustive list of things that have happened since before:
>>Emily and I did not actually go backpacking for 4-day. I was struck the Friday immediately preceding by extreme exhaustion and the overwhelming feeling that I had a shitload of work to get done, which could not be adequately accomplished during one measley day. And so: we stayed here, did some work, had intense bouldering sessions in which we listed to extremely loud music and traversed the entire length of the wall, ordered pizza two nights in a row, got addicted to Lost, and so on.
>>I'm serious about the Lost addiction. I watched all of season 1 in about a week and a half. Not until I finished it did I realize quite how much it had managed to suck up my soul. Alan recently ordered season 2, but it is still in the plastic wrap, and should remain so for as long as possible.
>>I had my Fulbright interview. I was a bit nervous for it, but it was actually remarkably fun! As fun as sitting at the head of a very large table and being interrogated by five professors can really be, I suppose. They seemed to like my application and asked very interesting questions that made me get excited and talk a lot, at which point they would all smile with me and give each other knowing glances. Hopefully this bodes well.
>>I have not yet had my Marshall interview, nor do I yet know if I even will have one. I'm supposed to find out "in November." Which is a very non-specific time that is not yet, but I've been getting antsy about it for weeks. I ran into Stephen (the only other Whitman applicant) this morning and asked him if he is getting antsy yet. He is not. That sounds sane. I honestly had an interview dream before I even submitted my written application. That does not sound as sane. But whatever; if insanity gets me to Scotland, so be it! November is in 6 days.
>>There is pumpkin pie fudge at Bright's. It is only amazing. I bought half a pound of it last Friday. I finished it this morning.
>>Ben Bloch's Goatsilk opening was on Friday. It's a really cool show, and should be immediately checked out by any Whitties who haven't made it there yet. Jess, Katy, and I dressed up in fun outfits (mine primarily consisting of my Value Village denim hotsuit) for the opening. You could see them if you go to cellevent.urglu.com and dig back to last Friday. (If you keep digging back to the preceding Saturday, you can also see Jesus humping Sara's arm.) Better than the opening reception: going to the corn maze afterwards with Anthea and her parents. Better than that: getting back into my weird outfit and going to the afterparty at Ben's house. Which was full of professors, Ben's friends from MT, Ben's mom, Jess, me, and the people I dragged along (namely: Ariel, Avi, and Eric). Professor parties are my new favorite. They have better beer, better food, better wine, and say much more interesting things when drunk. I took a brief interlude from the professor party to swing by the Secret Garden, congratulate Travis and Nicole on their engagement, and drink too much jungle juice. Then I returned to Ben's house, where at three in the morning I was dancing to Madonna in his living room with Katy, Ben, Caroline (Ben's girlfriend), a few of their friends from MT, and an art history professor. Brilliant.
>>And then I stayed up until 4 am AGAIN on Saturday. It's like freshman year all over again.
>>The PostSecret show opened in my gallery on Tuesday, meaning I worked a lot more than I realized in the preceding week. The show turned out really well, and I've gotten an enormous amount of great feedback. Seeing a whole room full of anonymous secrets from a small community where you know so many people is a pretty amazing thing. Frank Warren is coming here to talk on November 12, and I get to eat dinner and hang out with him, so I'm excited to talk to him about the show and his project and maybe even my thesis (or at least the postcard aspect of it) if I can sneak that in.
>>I've been working on compiling a list of addresses to which I will send these thesis postcards. So far, this has largely involved me doing creepy internet research on semi-famous people who I think are really cool. Miranda July! Chris Ware! Davy Rothbart! Dave Eggers! Tegan and Sara! Ozma! All will recieve my postcards, because I have found their addresses. I will also be sending postcards to a much larger number of non-famous people. If you know anybody who I do not know who you have mostly lost touch with but still have a current address for, please email me said address and tell me who this person is and how you knew them! Email addresses to stealthyshelby-at-yahoo-dot-com. Do it for the sake of art.
>>This Sunday, I will be participating in a 12-hour performance piece, because Jess has become a performance artist and now I am her tool. Literally. From 8 am to 8 pm on Sunday, there will be 9 extra people in her apartment performing various tasks for her. I am in charge of Media and Electricity. Meaning that I have control of all radios, iPods, VCRs, TVs, DVD players, lightswitches, heaters, etc. But I'm not allowed to talk. We'll see how that goes.
>>I (and the rest of the senior art majors) get to go to New York on November 15th. We're leaving three days early for Thanksgiving break so that we can spend five days in NYC and still have a break too. This is going to be amazing.
And now, a few relevant words from Snakes Say Hiss:
"I wanna stay up
stay up forever
I think I'll do that
stay up forever"
