Charlie proposed with twisted circlet made from plasticine. Jess couldn’t remember how she’d replied but Charlie got cross, smashed his creation into a brightly-coloured lump, and ran away.

Ben and Adam jointly propositioned her with a ring from a beer bottle. Jess laughed and the room span. They were all drunk. The boys left together.

She’d thought Jack was ‘the one’. They looked at rings and planned their future. Only Jess couldn’t help being clever and Jack couldn’t handle that.

Now here was Becker sliding an antique band on her finger. Jess blinked away tears. This was worth waiting for.
