It was their first Valentine’s Day as a couple. Abby gave Connor a card because she knew he’d be disappointed if she didn’t. Her side of the bed groaned under a giant red balloon, A3-sized card, chocolates, flowers and a stuffed teddy clutching a rose.
“Wow!” she said, surveying the haul.
Connor grinned. “I got carried away.” He paused, trying to read her expression. “But it’s OK, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
He still looked uncertain so she leaned in and kissed him preventing further speech.
It was awful - trite, clichéd. How could someone who loved her so much know her so little?
