The Misanthrope

For once I managed to be at the computer and hitting buttons at the right time so was able to get tickets for The Misanthrope with Keira Knightly.

MissP adores Knightly so she could have just stood there for two hours and it would have been enough! However, KK more than holds her own in the ensemble and in person is absolutely luminous - really pretty and glowy. The play itself (adaption by Martin Crimp) sits easily in the world of modern celebrity. The verse works well since the whole play is very brittle and artificial although the ending is ridiculously abrupt. Everything. Just. Stops.

The characters seem to toss up scene by scene if they play towards naturalistic or larger than life which is probably deliberate but came off as a bit inconsistent. This would have been first night of previews, but they added a couple of extra dates so it was the third public performance and I guess they’re still ironing out wrinkles. Anyways, It's two hours well spent.

Damian Lewis (Stormbreaker) spent the whole play with the veins of his neck standing out in rage. KK’s American accent held up fine although I couldn’t tell you which part of America it was supposed to be coming from. She visibly sagged with relief at curtain call.

We did Stage Door where there were serious amounts of paps blocking the way. Lyd got a blurry picture so that made her happy.
