1861 - Congress votes to add the phrase "In God We Trust" to United States coins. Since the Civil War was still in progress, you might think that could have waited. Apparently not.
1878 - Rutherford B. Hayes hosts the first egg roll event on the White House lawn. The Washington, D.C, egg roll had been taking place since 1814, but always on the lawn at the Capitol Building. Due to the condition the lawn was in, however, the event was canceled in 1877, and Congress further cemented a reputation for being stodgy old white guys by actually enacting a law prohibiting children from playing on their lawn.
1976 - Barbara Walters becomes the first female anchor of a news program when she takes the chair at NBC's "Today Show." Since that time, only "Law & Order" reruns in syndication have more hours on-screen then she does.
