Mon 6th Aug
Having got all of my stuff for work sorted out yesterday, I was ready early this morning and didn’t see any point in hanging around at home. The bus service into C-- isn’t too bad early in the mornings, maybe because the bus company knows they would have to deal with lots of pissed off commuters if the service was rubbish? I had decided my make-up would look fresher if I applied it before getting on the bus to G--. The problem I discovered with that idea was that before 8am, the shopping centre toilets were not yet open. There are mirrors at various points along the walls in C-‘s indoor shopping centre, so realising using one of those to apply all of my make-up (in full view of anyone walking through the centre) was my only option, I got on with it. I don’t think I looked very different, just a bit more ‘groomed’.
The second bus ride C-- to G-- took less time than I thought it would. Even with having to find the company’s premises I was still early. At 8:40 I was inside the Reception/open office area for a 9am start). The person I’d been told to report to gave me a quick tour of the premises and introduced me to the people who were in. My duties were quite simple on the first day, some typing, copying and answering the phone. It will take me a few days to learn everyone’s names though and remember where their desks are if they have one as there about four different offices.
Tues 7th Aug-Fri 10th Aug
For the rest of my first week I was getting more into my job. In terms of the tasks required its very much like the first job I ever had-answering the phone, passing on messages, dealing with sales calls from other companies, writing up delivery notes and doing some basic spreadsheet accounting. Its not only the job that is similar though. I have become an albeit slightly older and wiser version of the tall, polite, not very confident nineteen year old I was back then. Is that what is meant by ‘reverting to type’?
A few days ago I answered a post in an online forum about how much make-up people wore daily. After truthfully answering "I usually wear no make-up", things have had to change. While I'm doing this temporary Receptionist job I feel like I have to make more effort with my appearance. My Mon-Fri work make-up routine is currently:-
Concealer
Foundation
Eyeshadow
Mascara
A sheer, glossy lipstick.
My make-up routine probably takes me less than five minutes, but I’m not used to having to worry bout whether make-up looks ok. My eyelids are getting irritated by me wearing then later removing make-up everyday. The eye make-up I have is hypoallergenic, low-mid price range (2.99-8.00 pounds). I'm wondering if buying more expensive make-up would improve things .
I feel like it takes a week to get settled into any job. By Friday I was accustomed to my routine and I’d be happy to work at the company for longer than two weeks if they want me. Early next week I’ll enquire if there’s any chance of me working there for longer.
