Gunch Butter

No time to post...but I need a break from the pen/tween-tests (I'm not happy with the first drafts... or second drafts... but, come hell or high water, I'm calling Turner Studios tomorrow to set up a review of the tests!)

Noel St. John, a friend and fellow alum from Anneewakee just sent me a pic he took over the weekend at our reunion and I thought I'd share it with all...

That's me.
The white To-Go Box I'm carrying contains the sacred "GUNCH BUTTER," a gift I obtained from Mrs. Arnett, who worked there when I was a resident in the late 80's...

What is Gunch Butter?
It's a sticky brown substance which we probably would have killed for, except that there was always enough to go around... anything with real sugar was a rare treat at the Anneewakee facility, and this stuff had loads of it.

Gunch Butter is named after the icky tar which collects in pipe bowls & stems after they've been smoked...it smells of dinosaur farts and stains like india ink... real gunch is a mixture of spit, tobbaco, ash and some unknown ancient funk.

Gunch Butter is actually a 50/50 mix of peanut butter and apple or grape jelly.

I think this tub of Gunch should get me through the week...

The reunion was great, although I only saw 2 people from my era... we were allowed to go just about anywhere we wanted on our own... I visited both of the campsites that I lived on...
It was rather sad that they've pretty much been left to rot...

The staff treated us to a tour of the Evaluation & Observation Buildings (the "E&O" or "showboat") where we got to have an impromptu 'group meeting' of sorts with girl's in one of the 4 units...
when we entered Unit 4, Noel whispered in my ear that we were in Valhalla, or at least what we would've considered heaven when we were residents... Unit 4 was originally the girl's unit, a place where teen girls did their morning exercises in nothing more than a hospital gown ("robe")and socks...

well, enough nostalgia... time to get back to work.

If you're interested in seeing more pictures of Anneewakee's crumbling Central Campus check out Noel St. John's site... he's a pro photographer among other things....
