New FMP drabble: Discovery

Meh, not my favorite fic. But it was actually a lot worse.
As I said in the notes on ff.net, this was a kind of thought exercise for guessing what music Sousuke might like once he starts trying it out. I know he's been exposed to a bit of music throughout his life, but he seems to pay it no mind. Like with anything, if it doesn't help his survival or if it isn't involved in any way with a mission he has, he doesn't consider it important.
But music is important. I can't imagine the world without it. Even me, as tone deaf as I am, love music and a well-turned lyric. Therefore, I think that Sousuke would come around on this subject eventually.
When I started thinking about this chapter, I'd been listening to a lot of alternative country which involved some bluegrass music. It was... simple, in a way. Acoustic instruments and haunting melodies make for easy listening, IMO. Like a lot of other music, I don't think it gets in its own way, much. And I could see it as something that Sousuke might be able to start out with.
In the original fic, though, I just couldn't find a way to make that interesting. I wrote around 200 words and it just had no point. So I gave up. I wasn't even going to publish what I had been able to sort out. It was just not very good, even by fanfiction standards, which says a lot.
But yesterday morning, I kept thinking about it, and I thought about what music those closest to Sousuke might like. Tessa, Melissa, and Kaname all have American backgrounds, at least in part, so I took wild guesses for them. FWIW, my lovely husband, scribefigaro, loves listening to techno when he's concentrating, so I gave Tessa that trait, too. I don't spend much time with her as she's not a favorite character of mine, but thinking that she might share scribe's music taste made me love her just a little bit.
Melissa has that hard edge and defiant streak that goes well with metal. I could see Kaname having some exposure to oldies stations, both popular and rock, that she would love. So those two I don't think would be too far off with my guesses.
Finally Kurz has some actual musical background, so I made him pretty easy when it comes to music. He likes it all down to music's classical roots. This also made him the natural to help Sousuke find his groove, so to speak. :P
So yeah. Not my favorite fic. But it's a thing I've written and I'm not completely embarrassed by it (like I was the first draft), so here you go. :)
