WINTER NEWS ROUNDUP(ISH)

Mar 05, 2011 11:04

There seems to be some conflicting information as to when the new season will be airing. Last year it was over Easter, but Easter this year is April 24th and I doubt the BBC wants to wait that long (stranger things have happened, though, so don't blame me when you're reduced to eating several bags of mini eggs in anger because there's no new episode yet). The other date being kicked around is April 9th, but nothing has been confirmed yet either way.

In the meantime, let’s see what’s been going on over the winter while we’ve all been away!

CASTING NEWS

Bonneville on Board
Jan 28, 2011

Hugh Bonneville has been cast as a Pirate Captain in the new series which starts this Spring.

Best known for his recent role in Downton Abbey, Bonneville is one of the UK's most accomplished and familiar actors having appeared in movies including Tomorrow Never Dies and the Richard Curtis comedy, Notting Hill. He's also starred in televisions productions such as Agatha Christie's Poirot and Hunter (pictured above).

Discussing his new role in Doctor Who, he said, 'When I was a boy THAT music and Jon Pertwee's Doctor had me peeking out from behind the sofa every Saturday night. All these years later I am thrilled to be appearing in the new series. Although the Pirate's fears and demons are different to those of the young lad who watched through his fingers, they are no less vivid and terrifying; this new adventure is not for the faint-hearted.'

We can now confirm that Lily Cole will also star alongside Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.

Lily plays a mysterious creature that haunts a pirate ship. Sounds scary but Lily wasn't spooked, saying 'It is a great script and fun character and I'm glad to be involved!'

Lily Cole shot to fame as a supermodel but has recently starred in movies including St. Trinian's and Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

It's been confirmed that David Walliams will appear in the new series. He’ll feature in a spooky episode playing a character called Gibbis.

Walliams said, 'I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and am so looking forward to working with Matt Smith and running up and down some corridors with him.'

His episode has been written by Toby Whithouse, whose previous contributions include Vampires of Venice and School Reunion.

He’s Back!
Feb 25, 2011

We can confirm that James Corden is returning to Doctor Who!

James will reprise his role of Craig Owens, first seen in last series' adventure The Lodger. Back in 2010 James told us, 'There's been no talk of my return. I'd love another adventure - it would be great! I'm sort of disappointed I didn't get to go in the TARDIS...' Who knows if he'll find his way into the Doctor's time machine this time around?

The character of Craig Owens proved popular last year. James described him as 'an ordinary bloke' but part of the character's appeal was his quiet bravery and charm. He became firm friends with the Doctor and we're now looking forward to seeing that friendship renewed!

The BBC seems rather pleased with themselves about this

James Corden on reprising Doctor Who role
March 2, 2011

James Corden has revealed he is returning to Doctor Who.

The Gavin And Stacey star appeared in the last series of the sci-fi series as Craig Owens. The Doctor ended up moving into Craig's flat as his lodger.

"I can't wait to go back," said James, from the set of Sky1 sports quiz A League Of Their Own.

"I finish here on Wednesday and go straight to Cardiff on Thursday morning to start filming.

"I'm amazed and over the moon Steven (Moffat, Doctor Who boss) asked me back. There was a fans' poll of the last series, and the episode, The Lodger, did really well. I’m just going back for the one episode.”

After featuring in the series last time around, James said he would like to step foot inside the Tardis if he was to reprise the role. Will we see him in The Doctor's spaceship this time?

"I could well be, I can't possibly say," he said, clearly bound by Doctor Who's strict code of secrecy.

Asked if he would be making future appearances, he said: "That's not up to me, I couldn't possibly say."

The new series of Doctor Who returns in April. The new series of A League Of Their Own, which James hosts, begins on Sky1 on Friday March 4. A full interview with James and show regulars Jamie Redknapp, Georgie Thompson and Freddie Flintoff will follow.

COMIC RELIEF SPECIALS

Space and Time
March 2, 2011

Steven Moffat has revealed more details on the Doctor Who Comic Relief special.

First up, Moffat confirms that there are two mini-episodes, not one as originally thought, and each will be around 4 minutes long. One of them is called Space and the other Time.

Moffat told SFX: “It’s not a spoof. It’s in the style of the ones that we’ve done for Children In Need, so it’s taken seriously as a proper bit of Doctor Who - funny, but not a sketch. A little miniature story.

“There’s a moment with two Amy Ponds in it. If you’re a red-blooded male surely that’s enough! You’ve got Amy Pond flirting with herself.

“I think they’re really good, really very funny. It’s Matt, Karen and Arthur, and there isn’t a guest character. It’s just the three of them. A moment of life aboard the TARDIS. But obviously life about the TARDIS instantly gets you into terrible jeopardy, and all of causality is threatened.”

just ignore Moffat when he says words

Comic Relief coverage airs Friday 18th March from 7pm on BBC1.

What do you think, Starwhales? How do you feel about the season having 4 two-parters? What about the final list of writers? Any casting news you're interested in?

eta: It was incorrectly reported by the source that Richard Curtis is writing another episode this season; however, episode 10 is being penned by Tom McRae.
