I've just been confirmed with having type 2 diabetes. I can't say I am surprised, since I haven't really been eating properly for over two years since the trigeminal neuralgia set in.
So, now start the rounds of specialist and clinic appointments, and more blood tests to see if it can be controlled by diet alone, or if I will have to start taking metformin ... that will probably be decided at the end of January. So, for now, discipline with mealtimes, discipline with the chocolate, and discipline with a healthy diet, and a flu jab is recommended ... having that Friday morning, along with another blood test ... the HbA1c (at least I don't have to fast for that one). Working in a shop, on reflection, I feel it is probably just as well to have the flu jab, since the customers, and their kids are always coughing and sneezing all over us as if we were part of the furniture, and this year's serum is apparently effective against swine flu as well as the more normal kinds, and I have never had a really bad reaction to an immunisation jab, and believe me, with all the traveling I did in my youth, I have had the lot over the years!
The Doctor's surgery also gave me a whole load of bumph to read and absorb before the appointment at the diabetes clinic some time in January, where, hopefully, I will be given the "finger-prick" machine to test blood sugar levels myself ... I like that aspect of being given the opportunity to try to manage the levels with diet myself ... just as I like being allowed to manage the dosage of carbamazepine I take (within certain parameters)... my doctor knows I am interested in medicine, and can be trusted like that.
At least I know it isn't only the carbamazepine (for the trigeminal neuralgia) that is making me so tired all the time ... I expect I'll manage the diabetes ... I can be surprisingly self-disciplined when I have to! To tell the truth, it is almost a relief to have had this diagnosed, because now I can hope to start feeling better than I have done recently, in the very near future.
I have a feeling that 2011 is going to be a much better year than 2010 was.
