new project: for my sr. project or thesis (i'm not sure if i quite understand the similarities/differences between the two at this point) I want to study native american modification of estuary habitats historically. and document native plant/animal composition (historically and currently), and the ethnobotany of the native plants. it could end up just being a research paper, or I could work with a tribe or local organization on an actual evaluation of a local estuary ecosystem and develop some kind of framework or baseline data on which policy for restoration of the estuary will be based.
why i got inspired to consider this for my project: 1. keeping it living is an amazing book, one of very few that discuss the ways estuary systems have been historically modified by native americans. some of the root plants were edible and others had other uses, and there were other reasons (unknown to me as of yet!!) for managing the ecosystems. 2. right now there is a bunch of funding going into restoration projects of these estuaries around the puget sound. that means there will be some information for me to base my project on, some room for growth, and potentially maybe a job somewhere if my report comes out good!!
I also want to write a paper for one of my classes right now on the pending restoration plan at the lummi res. basically the paper would describe the goals of the project, how to evaluate those goals, and the most important measures to be met. it's called the conservation decision analysis. it will be nice to get a baseline working on the project before i dive into my sr. project.
can't believe this is all coming together!! i feel so nerdy but it feels so good to find something i am so interested in.
