MasterCard/Visa rules

Did you know, that while retailers *can* ask you to show your ID when you use your MasterCard or Visa at checkout, they can NOT make it a REQUIREMENT for completing the transaction?

Check it out.

While at SuperTarget last night, buying Birthday clothes with the teenager, I swiped my MasterCard Debit card for the $138 transaction. The smarmy clerk asked to see my ID. I asked why he needed to see my ID. He said "because the purchase is over $100". I *REGULARLY* (like, every time I shop there) spend more than $100 at Target, and have NEVER been asked for my ID before. My husband, who is smart about these kinds of things because he works at GameStop corporate, asked the clerk what would happen if I didn't show my ID. The clerk said I wouldn't get my merchandise, and mumbled something about "for your protection" and "identity theft". I ended up showing my ID to get out of there, as the store was closing in 10 minutes, but his smarmy attitude pissed both Joe and I off, and this morning I filled out the Merchant Violation Form and reported him. So there.
