It feels so "blog cliche", for lack of a better term, to comment on the latest misadventures of one Britney Spears but, then again, it seems the first rule of journal keeping/blogging is that you should never have to apologize for what you write in your journal. So chock this one up to be the internet equivalent of painting your house purple and pissing off the home owners association. Or something...
Is she in? Is she out? It is nice to see that Britney Spears' commitment to the rehabilitation process is on par with her commitment to motherhood, marriage, and, lest we forget, creating "timeless" music. I've heard all the comments, read all the articles, the requests for privacy for someone who chooses her privacy and mass exposure at her own convenience and, indeed, a seemingly endless addiction to attention. So...Brit...here is a radical concept for you to consider: Call it Step One of however many steps it takes you to get from here to there (with "there" being a comeback album that an overly forgiving public will snap up). If you want privacy how about actually pursuing it?
Now, since we're dealing with a 9th grade education and maturity level here I shall elaborate. Most private couples don't video tape their courtship and, even if they do, they don't sell it to UPN to create a short TV series. People who want privacy don't give a prime time interview viewed by millions as a means to request our privacy. Privacy can be achieved by allowing yourself to be an average person who does little to draw public exposure.
I get the impression that perhaps the reason Miss Spears has checked into rehab, then out of rehab, then into rehab, then out of rehab, and now back into rehab (and, shit, it's only Thursday!) is that she can't really tap into her actual addiction. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt; perhaps she has a drinking problem or a drug problem but, ultimately, I get the distinct impression that her biggest addiction is to the age-old problem known as being a dumb fuck. This condition is not exclusive to celebrities so, good news Brit, you can have your privacy and be a dumb fuck at the same time. And that may be all you can do because there isn't a 30-day treatment program for stupidity. No, the only cure for stupidity -- which more often than not walks hand-in-hand with immaturity -- is to get the education you never got. The one you and those responsible for you should have made sure you got while you were trying to create an empire. And that could take years and, in theory, should never stop. Ironic, it would seem, that you modeled your empire after one of your idols, Madonna, but failed to recognize that her longevity and success stems from a combination of talent and wicked smarts. For you, the former was questionable from the start and the lack of the latter has been ever-present.
If Miss Spears was not a mother of two -- and, wow, did those kids ever seem to strike out in the drawing of the parents -- she would be comic relief; as it stands she is a modern tragedy. I poke fun, I make snide remarks, and I do it because this young lady deserves it. She may have skipped the necessary steps it takes to get from teenager to young adult but the facts of life are these: She is a legal adult and, as such, she should be accountable. Accountability is a key ingredient to being a responsible anything. Start there, love. Think about what really matters and be willing to give up that around you in exchange for what you need.
When she gets that right I'll stop critiquing and start quietly rooting for her success, just as I would for anyone who shows a genuine desire to improve their lives. I haven't seen a genuine moment yet. But I'll wait.
That is all.
