Stupid English-- what if I don't want to use he or she?

Nov 11, 2011 21:04

English sucks for keeping characters of indeterminate gender. It's pretty much impossible to write a story without a his or her, he or she, thrown in at some point to avoid a completely awkward sentence structure and a distracting amount of repeated names. Sometimes I envy Japanese and the other languages in the world that make it a lot easier to work with gender neutrality. In English, 'it' just doesn't work for a person unless you're trying to be insulting. And 'they' doesn't technically work grammatically.

Why oh why did I decide to have a gender indeterminate character?

[EDIT]

After a lot of hemming and hawing I finally got around to writing... but then I kept breaking so I could look stuff up for reference. I'm still behind but not as bad as I was. At 13,891 so far...

This story also isn't nearly as exciting as it should be given the setting and topic, but that's fine. If nothing else, I can use all this as background info for yet another rewriting of this series-- hopefully that time being the last time.
