“I wonder what it’s like?”
”What’s that?” Giles asked absent-mindly as he put down the book he had been reading.
“To know that you are not only expected to save the world but that eventually you’re gonna die?”
”I don’t know. I imagine that it’s hard for the Slayers but I’ve never seen one reject her duties.”
”But does a Slayer really have a choice? I mean look at Buffy, what choice does she have? Reject her duties, but to be stalked by monsters that want to kill a Slayer?”
”Well I suppose you have a point. But still none of the Slayers have turned their back on their sacred duties.” Giles said as he looked at Cordelia, surprised at her statement.
“Isn’t that what Faith is doing by working with the Mayor?” Cordelia asked.
“Yes, but the situation is different.” Giles took of his glasses and started to polish them furiously.
“Are you trying to tell me in that the hundreds of years that the Council has been around, that Faith is the only Slayer that has said ‘No, I am not going to fight this battle, I am going to go join the winning side?’”
“Cordelia! I hardly call evil the winning side.”
”Yeah but if we were the winning side, don’t you think that the battle against evil would have ended by now?”
“Cordelia it’s a little more complex than that.”
”I don’t think so Giles, but still is Faith the only Slayer that’s gone bad?”
”I really don’t know, Watchers aren’t usually told things like that, that’s usually something the higher members discuss and I am just a Watcher.”
”Don’t get so stuffy, Giles, I’m just wondering. After all, think about it, Buffy could have gone bad. I mean the weight of the world on your shoulders when you’re only fifteen or sixteen, if not younger. And the whole no-friends rule, and being told what to do by a bunch of men in tweed suits, well let’s just say if I’d been a Slayer, I don’t know if I could have handled it like Buffy did.”
”Well, let’s be thankful that you aren’t a Slayer. But we should be researching this Ascension business.”
”Okay Giles,” Cordelia said as she picked up her book again.
