Summary: Dean never used to keep secrets from his brother.
Before Sam had left for university, they had never kept secrets from one another. In their lives, there had been more than enough secrets kept from the outside world that it had seemed wrong to keep things from one another. And then Sam had left suddenly one night and he had cut all ties with his family, and more importantly with his brother. Dean had woken up one morning to find Sam gone and things had changed overnight.
Dean had met Faith by chance when he had found her in a dirty alleyway behind a seed bar where she was taking down the demon that he had been hinting. For once, he could open up freely to a woman without having to hide who or what he was. Not that there had been much talking between the two of them that first night. Dean had learned first hand that slaying made Faith hungry and horny. By the time dawn was painting the sky red and gold, Faith had left. Not that he had expected her to stay. They didn’t live in some fairy tale world.
Luck had kept bringing them together and soon their relationship (if it could be called that) developed into something other than quick sex to satisfy themselves after a hunt. Both of them were realists to know that whatever happened between them wasn’t going to have some happy ending. Dean left the idea of fairy tale endings to his brother because he refused to turn his back on the truth. He never asked Faith why she didn’t believe in fairy tales, even though he knew that she’d tell him why if he asked. Dean wasn’t really much of a talker anyhow.
As the months turned into years, Dad would go on his hunting trips while Dean did his own thing. His own thing that usually involved hooking up with Faith and hunting with her.
Then Dad left for good and Faith’s cell was shut off and Dean knew that he had to turn to Sam. By the time that Faith had finally contacted him, Dean had already decided to keep her a secret from his younger brother, especially considering how Sam had reacted to Cassie. Dean didn’t want to deal with Sam’s attitude if he found out about Faith. Somehow Dean knew that Sam would have expected Dean to track down their father with Faith’s assistance.
Or at least that’s what he told himself. Deep down, Dean knew that he didn’t want Sam knowing about Faith for the same reasons that his brother kept silent about Jess. After years of living in one another’s pockets for so long, both brothers had something that had been solely their own. They both had something that hadn’t been shared with one another and something that didn’t need to be shared. So Dean kept Faith a secret while he and Sam continued to follow their father’s orders. He promised himself that when this was over, he’d track her down again and maybe this time they’d stay together.
