Notes: Set prior to Faith’s arrival in Sunnydale. This fic also contains very minor spoilers for Go Ask Malice (a novelization by Robert Joseph Levy) about Faith’s life before she came to Sunnydale.
Summary: In the end, everyone lets Faith down.
Into each generation one girl, born with the strength and
skill to hunt the vampires and to stop the spread of evil.
She alone will stand against the forces of darkness.
Faith had never really thought about what being Chosen as the Slayer meant until Professor Dormer casually told her that she wasn’t the only Chosen alive. It hurt her more than anything else had ever hurt her because it meant that her destiny had been stolen from her. She wasn’t the only girl who was destined to stand alone against the forces of darkness because the girl who had been Chosen before her had fallen in their shared battle to keep the world safe from the monsters.
Her newfound destiny suddenly seemed cheap and tawdry because some other young woman had been murdered before her. She wondered if the girl who had so recently died had ever felt redundant because of some chick with a stupid name had somehow managed to cheat death.
Faith clenched her fists as she stared into the bathroom mirror and she thought about how she was made redundant because the Council didn’t think she was good enough to guard the Hellmouth. Good ole Faith, a natural at slaying, was only good enough to slay average vamps, while little miss Buffy got the prestige and honour of having a destiny that wasn’t made redundant. Then again, Faith had never managed to cheat death either. But it still hurt her that the Professor had lied to her about being the only Slayer, yet at the same time it didn’t surprise her at all. The Professor was just someone else who wanted what they could get from Faith and didn’t really care about her.
