Willow had performed the curse so that she could save him, and since she had been unaware at Angelus’ success in performing the ritual, she had been at a disadvantage. Instead of saving Angel, she had only caused Angel and Buffy heartache and pain. She didn’t need to be told why Buffy had run away since she has the nightmares of the moment when the blonde says that she loves Angel before she runs her sword through him.
On her good nights, the painful scene repeating over and over again in her nightmares only torments Willow. On her bad nights, which are more common, she is the invisible spectator to Angel’s torture in the hell that Buffy sent him to. The soul truly is a curse as Angel is tortured over and over again for the crimes that Angelus had committed and for the soul that Willow cursed him with. She can feel and taste his pain and sorrow, but she is powerless to help him or even comfort him.
Over and over again, Willow is reminded of how her resolve to save Angel and Buffy has failed. She is powerless while Buffy has run away and Angel, who suffers the most, has fallen from grace. His descent seems to be never-ending to the redhead and she regrets what she has done because she had wanted to prove to everyone that she was capable of casting a powerful spell.
