It hadn’t really surprised Severus Snape to find out that the Dark Lord had plans for Hermione Granger; after all it only made sense that the most direct route to attack Harry Potter was through his two best friends. They were, after all, what kept him sane and ready to defeat the Dark Lord. What had surprised the Potions Master were the Dark Lord’s plans to have Snape be the one who seduced her to the Death Eaters. Rather than see the girl broken and destroyed, the Dark Lord wanted to have her brilliant mind and talents on his side. And since the Malfoys were still being punished for Draco’s abysmal attempts at assassinating Dumbledore, only Snape was close enough to the girl to successfully bring about the Dark Lord’s plans.

As he paced the familiar confines of his dungeon classroom, Snape felt a momentary pang of regret. Despite his image of a cold and heartless bastard, he had no desire to see someone like Hermione Granger brought as low as she would be if he were successful. He could careless about her friendships with Potter and Weasley, nor did he really care if her allegiance to the Dark Lord could swing the balance of power. Instead he regretted the role that he was to play since it would undoubtedly dim one of the brightest lights in the wizarding world. Snape sneered at the romanticized thought but he still couldn’t help the emotion because soon Hermione would go from being the precious darling of the Golden Trio into either a broken and bitter witch shaped in his very image, or a very great danger to the wizarding world and those who stood against her. As he watched her carefully prepare her potion, he knew that he might feel regret but he still held his life much higher than he valued protecting some innocent girl. One way or another she would lose that innocence. Even the great Dumbledore could not protect her or any of the students at Hogwarts from the taint and stain of the Dark Lord, especially when the war between the two factions finally broke.

Snape satisfied his regret with the rationalization that he was saving her from a worse fate from the hands of one of the other Death Eaters. If he refused to do this, then he would be punished, quite possibly with his life. And then the Order would be short a spy. Even if he didn’t pay the price of his refusal with his life, another Death Eater, one with fewer scruples, would no doubt be willing to fulfill the Dark Lord’s desire to bring her to their side. No, he rationalized; this was the only way that would cause the least amount of harm to her.

“Miss Granger, you will stay after class today,” Snape quietly demanded as he breathed the order in her ear.

Her nervous nod was the entire acceptance that he required in order to put his plans into motion. He instantly decided that he would use his status as a spy for the Order and her sentimentality to his advantage. It would be easy enough to convince her that she would be helping to protect her precious Harry if she worked with him. Under his careful tutelage, Hermione Granger would survive the impending war, regardless of which side that won. Just as he would.
