Bobby has been behaving strangely this past week. He hasn't been as active as he usually is, and he's been unusually sleepy. Today I kept checking on him because I just felt something was weird. His breathing seemed very very odd. So I called the vet's emergency number, and I was lucky enough that he hadn't gone out of town for the holiday yet. My mom and I rushed him over because he was just so lathargic all of a sudden. At the vets, Dr. Kramer did an x-ray and we saw that he had a ton of fluid in his chest and abdomen cavities. He spend about an hour draining the fluids and said that this was a sign of lymphoma or heart disease. He's going to send the fluid off to the labs to check for cancer cells (but its going to take a while to get the results because of the holiday). If its lymphoma, he might have about a week or so left. If its heart disease, a few more months. Dr. Kramer gave me a diaretic to give Bobby every 8 hrs or so that his body can pee out the fluids before he just retains it and hopefully he'll make it through the weekend. He has an appt on Wednesday to see what's best for Bobby after some tests are down and if we should put him down.
Right now he's in the cage resting and groggy from anestheia, but his breathing is much better. I love him so much, I just don't want him to suffer. I wish there was more I could do for him, but the vet said this is common in older ferrets. 5 years doesn't seem very old to me, but he's practically a grandpa in ferret years. I have to remember that... :(
