http://www.freaktofreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1214&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0I'm pissed. Mostly because some people are totally misinterpreting the comic. Maybe I just didn't make it clear in the comic, but most people seemed to understand the strip. The Hairdresser, Maria, ONLY spoke to Candi in Spanish because she thought Candi LOOKED hispanic. Not because she speaks to everyone in Spanish. Notice she speaks to Candi in fluent English as soon as she's told she isn't hispanic. GEEZ PEOPLE. Candi was only annoyed because this kind of thing happens to her all the time and she was already in a bad mood because of her hair. The comic was about assuming things based on apperances.
And about the learning Spanish thing. I live in Miami, FL.
57.3% are of Hispanic/Latino descent in this city. It makes sense to try and learn some Spanish if you live and work here. And you know what? Most of them know English too. It's not a bad thing to know two languages. Cultural diversity is awesome.
The comic is based in Central Florida (around Gainesville).
And statewide, Hispanics are the largest minority. I mean, its just smart thinking if people learn the other language here. Whether its someone who doesn't speak Spanish learning Spanish, or someone who doesn't speak English learning English.
Now, I don't know how it is in other parts of the country. I'm just speaking from my own experiences. I just always get upset when people are like "They should learn to speak the way we speak." No matter which side is saying it.
(Also, the hairdreser isn't Mexican. She's Cuban. And yes, its a big difference. )
rargh. vent vent.
