[Atsiliepimai] "An Inconvenient truth"

Once again, I watched a completely random movie instead of something that has been lying on my shelve for three years waiting for attention. Strangely enough, it was a documentary this time - "An Inconvenient truth", portraying Al Gore's campaign on raising awareness of the global warming issues (primarily in the States). Politics and occasional American patriotism aside, it's a good film. It truly focuses on environmental issues and manages, to a reasonable extent, to leave Mr Gore's personality and political aspirations untouched (there are some personal facts, but they all point to a bigger message). The only - and quite disturbing - point here is, Al Gore wouldn't be able to give his lectures on those inconvenient truths to huge audiences if there was not the same system that spurs the global warming on. He's flying, he's driving, he uses his laptop in a number of shots. Huge screens, comfortable halls, all the modern technology, even Mr Gore's and everyone else's appearance point to extensive industries behind, industries that most probably actually hinder Gore's appeal rather than help it. Can it be averted? Probably not. The main goal of the film was to show where the problems are, but then, at the very end, we are told that "humanity already possesses all the necessary means to slow down the crisis". What means? How is an individual able to help? These questions are largely left unanswered, and the film does not work as a "learn by example" model. I agree that it was not the purpose, but then, how many of the spectators will actually care enough to go look for ways to contribute, after they've seen this film? That's an important question to answer, and I do not think that this documentary fully succeeded on this level.

Overall, a good example of healthy propaganda. (do you even say it in English? I guess you don't but it sounds so nice in Lithuanian :] )
