Ro-ren and RooG Eat Singapore

Aug 14, 2013 17:34

Hey guys! Last weekend (4 days) we went to SINGAPORE! It was pretty awesome.

Our weekend of 17373957292 calories began with lunch on our China Airlines flight from Tokyo to Taipei. We went with China Airlines, because they were the cheapest by far. We were both kinda nervous about taking the cheapest airline and our expectations were pretty low, but... China Airlines was amazing! Great food, entertainment, and service.

Incidentally, China Airlines is actually based out of Taiwan, not China. Would definitely fly with them again!

We had a 4.5 hour layover in the Taiwan airport, so we got lunch #2 to kill time. :P Taiwanese wonton soup with pickles and annindofu.

The wontons were the best I've ever had in my life. They exploded with flavor when I bit into them. :O But I found the soup to be kinda tasteless... I guess I'm used to the thicker soups in Japanese ramen. The pickles were DEELISH, and I'm not usually into pickles. The dessert was good, but it was room temperature! Is that how they eat it in Taiwan? Annindofu is meant to be cold. ;C

Got on our Taiwan -> Singapore flight, where we were promptly served dinner! I LOVE airplane food. I love all food, really.

We arrived in Singapore late on Friday night, and would be leaving early on Monday morning. So we only had two days, but we made the best of them! Breakfast was at a really nice place very close to our hotel, an Australian restaurant called (what else?) Boomarang. Yes, spelled with an "a" in the middle instead of an "e".

Excuse my derpy face. I must have been so excited to be in beautiful Singapore and eating french toast for the first time in forever! My food was yummy, but towards the end I found myself wishing the cook hadn't drowned it in maple syrup. A little would have gone a long way.

SO! Here we are in Singapore. What do we wanna eat for lunch? Singaporean food, of course! Or, at the very least, food that's not readily available in Japan.

We ended up having to go for the latter, because... apparently Singaporeans aren't really into Singaporean food. Or something. We spent HOURS walking the area around our hotel (which was near Clarke Quay, on the riverside, for those in the know), and I swear to you that probably around 60% of the restaurants we saw were Japanese restaurants. Every kind of Japanese food imaginable. Ramen. Sushi. Teppanyaki. Yakiniku. Udon. Even in Okinawan food restaurant, which in all my years here I don't think I've ever seen in Yokohama.

Finally at around 3PM, we were exhausted and just wanted to eat SOMETHING, so we went with this sandwich shop called Epicurious. I had my first-ever Monte Cristo sandwich. It was good, but I don't think I'd order it again because I found I wasn't a big fan of the mushy bread.

At dinner we went to this place called Clarke Quay, which is kind of like an amusement park for adults, I guess. It opens at night and features a whole bunch of bars and restaurants serving every cuisine imaginable. In the end we went with Highlander, a Scottish restaurant/ bar/ nightclub.

The waiters and waitresses freaked out over RooG's Utilikilt, because they were all wearing kilts themselves! RooG and I had never had Scottish food before so we were pretty stoked. I got the salmon & haddock cream pie. mmm. RooG had a venison burger.

RooG declared that we'd be having dessert, so we went with something called cranachan. It's basically cream with oatmeal and berries and a touch of whiskey. WOW I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS

It was so nice to sit there and watch all the people go by. I wanna go back. ;_;

The next morning, it was raining and RooG liked Boomarang so much that he wanted to go back. So we did. I got the salmon brioche. WOW!!!! was this good

We spent the morning and part of the afternoon on Orchard Road, where we passed by a billion different lunch options and none of them looked appealing. :/ So we ended up taking a taxi back to our hotel and going back to a mall called The Central, where we found an American restaurant called Billy Bomber's. They were having a buy one, get one free deal on the rib platters. o__o How could we resist?

It looks small in the picture, but my Ribs & Chix platter was a LOT of food. I was stuffed and happy.

Our last meal was spent at the Night Safari. We went to a buffet there called Ulu Ulu, which claimed to serve Singaporean food, but was in reality a mix of a whole bunch of different cuisines, mostly Indian and Japanese and Chinese but lots of other stuff too. I have come to the conclusion that that's what Singaporean food is! No complaints here.

We ate dragonfruit for the first time at this buffet. yum!!

Breakfast on Monday was at Changi Airport, which, by the way, is the awesome airport I have ever seen in my whole life. I forgot to take a picture of the food itself (whoops), so here's a crummy picture of the menu. I had Toast Set #1, which was peanut butter toast with two half-cooked eggs (is that the right word?) and "kopi", which Wikipedia told me is Malaysian-style coffee. mmmmmmMMmmmM

Lunch on the Singapore-> Taipei flight. I see you, little dragonfruit!

and dinner on the Taipei-> Tokyo flight, consumed while watching an old episode of America's Next Top Model. I took full advantage of the entertainment system and watched a lot of movies-- How To Train Your Dragon, My Week With Marilyn, and Monsters, Inc. I tried to watch the second Sherlock Holmes movie but it was awful so I gave up after a half hour D-:

More dragonfruit! Yay!

And that was our trip in food. Next time I'll post some more, non-food pictures. :)

OH and I must announce to the world that today I went running in my Vibrams and my knees didn't hurt at all! Could it be? Have I finally figured out this whole minimalist running thing?? I hope, I hope...

running, fitness, travel, minimalist running, food
