Genesis had arrived only shortly before the main round and after his talk with Sephiroth, he had decided to participate in this mini-tournament of sorts. He couldn't join the Hades Cup for now, but perhaps when it reopened he would ( ... )

So his opponent used a sword, huh? Zell was never the type to think himself at a disadvantage compared to those with weapons. It just meant he'd have to move a little quicker to ensure he could avoid that sword and get close enough to land a strike.

"Bring it on!"

Eager to see what this guy was made of, Zell decided to go on the offensive first. This guy looked older than he was, maybe making him a more seasoned fighter as a result. No time for jumping to conclusions, though! Propelling himself forward with a burst of energy, Zell dashed across the arena towards the Genesis, trying to keep an eye on that sword while he did. He opted to go with something simple at first-- to test the waters. He didn't want to use up magic if he didn't have to.

Once he met the swordsman halfway, Zell sprang through the air and shot a foot out, aimed for the center of the man's chest with the intention of knocking him off balance.

Thrilled with the prospect of a challenge, a grin spread across Zell's mouth once his foot struck the flat of the blade and he was pushed off into the air. He used that momentum to arc backwards and flip himself around so that he'd land on his feet. He came down in just enough time to brace himself for the sword being swung at him.

There was a reason the backs of his gloves were plated in metal-- and this was it. He brought up his fists and deflected the blade with the back of one. It was a risky move in and of itself given that he could have missed his mark, so he didn't care to test his luck further in that respect. As soon as he got enough of an opening, he closed in and went for an uppercut.

Once Genesis put distance between them again, Zell couldn't help but glance at his glove. No way would he be able to pull a move like that again; the sword had nearly cleaved through the plate! (Yikes...! Could'a lost a hand!) His eyes immediately fixed on the other man when he spoke, almost widening when he seemed to instill power into his blade. Upping the ante, huh?

"Yeah, I'm game!" Zell shot back, grinning.

Except, he took note of the spell Genesis cast and realized when he said he was upping the ante, he meant it. Zell's saving grace was that he was used to magic, but he couldn't move himself fast enough to get out of the way. He tried to steel himself for the attack in the little time he had to prepare, but it blew him back across the arena regardless, leaving a good slice on one of his forearms in its wake.

He skidded a ways before rolling himself up onto one knee; he didn't stop to inspect the cut. It wasn't enough to stop him from using his fists, after all. "That's how you wanna play, huh?" Zell prompted, rising to his ( ... )

By this point, Zell was definitely glad he opted to participate in the tournament. This guy undoubtedly showed himself to be a skilled fighter-- one he couldn't afford to take his eyes off of for even a second. That sword of his was holding up a whole helluva lot better than they usually did at Balamb, too. That spoke in volumes!

Once Genesis started charging him again, he decided it was best not to try and stop him this time. Especially not at these speeds. That sword would cleave through his gloves. So Zell dove back into a double handspring, then made a little show of backflipping again to get back onto his feet-- all to avoid the sword. It was a little dizzying doing that at high speed, but Zell was fairly used to it anymore ( ... )

For a moment, Zell got over-confident and that was a mistake. He watched the Firaga burst when it collided with the square and had aim to move forward, only to realize Genesis was also controlling the remains of the spell. His smug grin vanished as the smaller fireballs began closing in on him. Attempting to deflect them was a bad idea, so with some quick thinking, he drew Shell in the attempt to protect himself. While it curbed the damage it would have done without it, Genesis still caught him in mid-air and that was bad news.

When the fire blew up around him, he let out a rather undignified (and high-pitched) yell as he was launched far up into the air, limbs flailing the whole way. He managed to regain some semblance of balance and got his feet back underneath him, but he landed hard and nearly toppled forward onto his stomach as a result. Catching himself on his hands, however, Zell pushed himself back up, still vibrating from the impact. This guy had some pretty fancy magic up his sleeve, but he wasn't deterred and he wasn't ( ... )

Before Genesis even went on the offensive again, Zell could see where this was going. Just how much could they up each other before one of them took out the other? He recognized all too well the sound of an oncoming Thunder-type spell and immediately steeled himself. He cast Shell on himself earlier, so he opted to let it do its job. Once the Thundaga shot down, he felt the electricity course through his body, shocking him inside out. He let out a cry when the sheer force of it finally knocked him flat on his back. He found himself wishing he'd junctioned his Thundagas to his defense so he would have at least been immune. Those hurt!

"Well. I've got one more trick up my sleeve," he breathed, climbing up onto his feet.

Without giving himself long to catch his breath, Zell finally drew Aura. A light flashed out around him and suddenly he was aglow with a bright golden aura. It and the Haste he was still buzzing under the effect of gleamed, drenching him in a gold and white, alternating and pulsating with power. If Genesis thought Zell ( ... )
