He was fast too. Genesis' smirk widened as he widened his stance, digging his heel into the ground as he quickly moved his blade across his body. Placing his hand on the flat on the blade, he blocked Zell's kick before it could hit his chest. Having already prepared, he wasn't knocked off balance. From here, he pushed out to send the boy back before propelling himself forward, Rapier swinging towards Zell.

The blond wasn't the only one who was fast. Where Genesis had lacked in strength, compared to Sephiroth and Angeal anyway, he gained in speed.

Thrilled with the prospect of a challenge, a grin spread across Zell's mouth once his foot struck the flat of the blade and he was pushed off into the air. He used that momentum to arc backwards and flip himself around so that he'd land on his feet. He came down in just enough time to brace himself for the sword being swung at him.

There was a reason the backs of his gloves were plated in metal-- and this was it. He brought up his fists and deflected the blade with the back of one. It was a risky move in and of itself given that he could have missed his mark, so he didn't care to test his luck further in that respect. As soon as he got enough of an opening, he closed in and went for an uppercut.

Genesis was a bit surprised at the recklessness of that action, using his fists to stop his blade. But he also admired it as well. How could he not? No one thought to block a blade with a fist but this teenager. His sword caused sparks to fly from that metal-padded glove, and for a moment, he pushed harder to get threw but his glowing Mako blue eyes caught the movement of Zell's body shifting to close in.

It was a close call, his feet pushing back as hard as possible to prevent that fist of connecting. The fist still managed to clip his chin, the metal plating cutting throw his pale skin. Genesis grunted and quickly put some distance to wipe the blood from his chin. Well, he hadn't been nicked like that in years.

"Impressive," He commented, a green light emitting from his wrist that moved to run across the crimson blade of Rapier. The blade began to glow, runes appearing upon the blade until it was fully lit with a red fire. "Very impressive, indeed. But I think I'd like to up the ante just a bit. Are you game?"

The image if a blue clock appeared before Genesis, the hands moving clockwise from noon to midnight and to any magic user, it was obvious was Genesis just cast.

Haste.

Genesis was gone, moving in blur to close in on Zell again, glowing blade moving fast.

Once Genesis put distance between them again, Zell couldn't help but glance at his glove. No way would he be able to pull a move like that again; the sword had nearly cleaved through the plate! (Yikes...! Could'a lost a hand!) His eyes immediately fixed on the other man when he spoke, almost widening when he seemed to instill power into his blade. Upping the ante, huh?

"Yeah, I'm game!" Zell shot back, grinning.

Except, he took note of the spell Genesis cast and realized when he said he was upping the ante, he meant it. Zell's saving grace was that he was used to magic, but he couldn't move himself fast enough to get out of the way. He tried to steel himself for the attack in the little time he had to prepare, but it blew him back across the arena regardless, leaving a good slice on one of his forearms in its wake.

He skidded a ways before rolling himself up onto one knee; he didn't stop to inspect the cut. It wasn't enough to stop him from using his fists, after all. "That's how you wanna play, huh?" Zell prompted, rising to his feet. "Let's make the odds even, then!"

And with that, Zell drew Haste out of his own magic reserves, soon feeling the adrenaline rush through his veins, "Let's DO THIS!"

Zoom! He shot forward, a blur himself, and threw all his weight into a straight-arm punch.

Now this was more like it.

Genesis flipped the blade, against catching the punch against the flat of the blade. It was strong enough to not break, not even bend, but he knew that his his sword hadn't been imbued with magic, it could have bent slightly. If nothing else, Genesis felt the power behind the attack. The boy was young, reckless, but powerful. A bit like Genesis back in his SOLDIER days.

They were a blur of red and blue to anyone watching, Genesis was pushed back by that powerful punch but with a skid, halt, and leap, Genesis was back in the air and running at Zell. Blade swinging for another attack, Genesis didn't hold back.

By this point, Zell was definitely glad he opted to participate in the tournament. This guy undoubtedly showed himself to be a skilled fighter-- one he couldn't afford to take his eyes off of for even a second. That sword of his was holding up a whole helluva lot better than they usually did at Balamb, too. That spoke in volumes!

Once Genesis started charging him again, he decided it was best not to try and stop him this time. Especially not at these speeds. That sword would cleave through his gloves. So Zell dove back into a double handspring, then made a little show of backflipping again to get back onto his feet-- all to avoid the sword. It was a little dizzying doing that at high speed, but Zell was fairly used to it anymore.

An idea popped into his head at that moment, and once he reacquired his balance, he slammed the heel of his foot down into one of the stone squares, flipping it up into the air. He leapt up to meet it and drove his foot into the center, turning it into a dangerous spinning projectile.

He'd be lying if he said he couldn't wait to see what else this guy could do.

Zell was dodging his sword admirably, gaining speed as he did so before he put some distance. It wasn't until the stone square was in the air that Genesis had realized what Zell was going to do. In the few seconds he had, Genesis had to make a split decision. Meet the stone with his sword, dodge it, or use something else.

He opted for the last option and skidded to a halt. His hand glowed fiery for a brief moment as he gathered up the heat, then with a small cry, he chucked the massive fire ball at the stone. It exploded upon contact, but Genesis wasn't done. Taking control of the various fireballs that came from his Firaga attack, he pulled them back to send them careening at the airborne blond, reminiscent of that sparring all those years ago.

Only Genesis wouldn't take it too far, not this time. He wanted to defeat Zell, not kill him, after all. Still, it was going to be interesting to see what Zell did with that many fire spells flying at him.

For a moment, Zell got over-confident and that was a mistake. He watched the Firaga burst when it collided with the square and had aim to move forward, only to realize Genesis was also controlling the remains of the spell. His smug grin vanished as the smaller fireballs began closing in on him. Attempting to deflect them was a bad idea, so with some quick thinking, he drew Shell in the attempt to protect himself. While it curbed the damage it would have done without it, Genesis still caught him in mid-air and that was bad news.

When the fire blew up around him, he let out a rather undignified (and high-pitched) yell as he was launched far up into the air, limbs flailing the whole way. He managed to regain some semblance of balance and got his feet back underneath him, but he landed hard and nearly toppled forward onto his stomach as a result. Catching himself on his hands, however, Zell pushed himself back up, still vibrating from the impact. This guy had some pretty fancy magic up his sleeve, but he wasn't deterred and he wasn't about to give up.

"That was pretty awesome! But I got a few tricks up my sleeve, too!"

He lunged forward, picking up momentum from the Haste spell before reeling his fist back and plunging it into the floor of the arena. It was this action that truly demonstrated the strength behind his arms. As soon as his fist went through the initial layer, it sent up a burst of dirt and stone spraying out into a large shockwave that would surely knock Genesis off his feet if he failed to get out of the way.

Genesis watched in satisfaction as Zell was hurled into the air and landed with a loud thud, on his feet no less. Genesis had been charging Zell as soon as he landed on the ground when he heard Zell. He skidded to a halt, but it was too late and Zell had already begun his attack.

Quickly, hastily, Genesis jumped into the air, wing beating wildly to get him higher up but the stone and dirt was spraying too fast. While Genesis had successfully evading the ground shockwave, he couldn't evade the explosion of earth that slammed into him. He dodged and rolled out of the way as best he could, but several boulders had slammed into his body and he was knocked out of the air.

He landed with a grunt, legs curling to absorb the impact but his body still rolled. When he came to a stop, he was bruised and scratch, bleeding in some places, but his feet were under him, his combat boots keeping him from landing back onto his backside. He panted softly, but he was thoroughly impressed. So used to his spars with Angeal and Sephiroth that fighting another magic user and one who used his physical attacks with the ground around him was certainly a new one for him.

"It's been quite awhile since someone knocked me to the ground like this," He said. "Sadly, it never lasts long. You are quick, but... are you as fast as lightning?"

His hand raised, the skies darkened as the highest thunder spell was cast. Thunder rolled and it was the only warning Zell was going to get before the Thundaga spell rained down upon him.

Before Genesis even went on the offensive again, Zell could see where this was going. Just how much could they up each other before one of them took out the other? He recognized all too well the sound of an oncoming Thunder-type spell and immediately steeled himself. He cast Shell on himself earlier, so he opted to let it do its job. Once the Thundaga shot down, he felt the electricity course through his body, shocking him inside out. He let out a cry when the sheer force of it finally knocked him flat on his back. He found himself wishing he'd junctioned his Thundagas to his defense so he would have at least been immune. Those hurt!

"Well. I've got one more trick up my sleeve," he breathed, climbing up onto his feet.

Without giving himself long to catch his breath, Zell finally drew Aura. A light flashed out around him and suddenly he was aglow with a bright golden aura. It and the Haste he was still buzzing under the effect of gleamed, drenching him in a gold and white, alternating and pulsating with power. If Genesis thought Zell was fast and powerful before...

The speed at which Zell moved when he burst into a run was nothing short of breakneck, leaving afterimages its wake. It was Duel time, baby!

Zell tried to zoom around Genesis in a circle, always on the move, in order to assault him with a flurry of martial arts, eager to see how he'd keep up. If one hit, however, it'd be with twice the force he exhibited before.

It was something Genesis could never control well when it came to fights. Eventually, someone upped the ante and Genesis always followed suit until things got out of hand. Genesis watched as the lightning rained down upon the boy and was, again, impressed by his resilience. That Shell spell was lasting far longer than anticipated, but it was obviously doing its job.

"Oh?" He tilted his head, before watching the unfamiliar Aura be cast. If nothing else, Zell looked like a one man parade and it was pretty ridiculous looking. However, despite how odd and laughable it looked, when Zell moved, it was certainly no laughing matter. Genesis was quick to wrap his wing around himself and hold up his arms to block those flurry of martial arts.

His bracelet glowed and he cast another round of Hastega, which allowed him to see Zell just a little better. His glowing eyes moved fast, tracking Zell and trying to locate a pattern despite the near blur of him through the inky black feathers and the bruising he knew he was getting all over his body. But he stood still, taking the hits until-

Firaga.
