america is a joke
last night i went to a night of stand up comedy featuring 4 nz comedians. i was really curious about nz humor, and sometimes i was laughing just because it was so regional, like these jokes about "knox"??? i didnt get. only 2 of these dudes were actually funny, of the other 2, one was so drunk he kept forgetting what he was saying & the other one had the most annoying voice. ben hurley was really funny, he was so crass, but as i've said, the nz accent makes anything charming. the best thing was the jokes about the usa, americans, george w. bush. as a general thing in coming to nz i was worried there would be a lot of anti-american sentiment, but they're so laidback here, they're not really mad at us so much as laughing at us. ben was poking fun at a guy in the audience, he asks where he's from, the guy says "the u.s." & he says "oh, are you going to invade us?" then he was talking about being in america & how there's news everywhere about the war and stuff, with a little update bar even running across the bottom of the playboy channel, and he physically imitates a guy jacking off, being like "oh, no, thats terrible!" and then he says the bushites are just watching the news and jacking off, going "yee-haw!" (i am reminded of nick rutherford.) i dont know how funny this can be on my blog, i just wanted to give you guys an idea of how we are seen in nz!
today i am doing preliminary lectures, finding out about course requirements and stuff. i went to the theatre one, met some people, they look artsy, cool. now its onto film. then there's a free theatre performance i'm going to, then last is gender studies. classes start monday...except wait, i only have classes wed, thur, fri. at 10am, but oh well. i still need to get books. there are tons of plays for my nz & australian theatre class! bah. but exciting.
tonite i think i'm going to this concert featuring 3 female singers. should be cool. & only $5!
today i went to sign up to volunteer at critic, the campus magazine. so hopefully they'll give me some writing assignments!
