Although the labels "slut" and "whore" are still applied liberally, hooking up is, on the whole, more socially acceptable as a result of the sexual revolution. Young people hook up for a myriad of reasons. Some are exploring their sexuality, and the no-strings-attached policy reduces quite a bit of pressure. If you do something "wrong" while hooking up, you lose face for a short time. If you do something "wrong" in a relationship, you risk losing more. For others, hooking up is a way to boost self-esteem, to feel attractive and desired. And also - how could one forget this - hooking up is an easy way to satisfy physical desires. Americans are all about instant gratification, no?

To me, the most important reason why people hook up - myself included -is because they are afraid and disillusioned. They are tired of investing so much of themselves into relationships that ultimately do not work out the way they hoped. They are cautious with their hearts because they cannot stand to be hurt anymore. They have less time, less energy, and less naivete.

Hooking up works sometimes. But in the end, I must admit that I walk away feeling thoroughly unfulfilled. Now the question is no longer whether or not I can separate sex and love (I can), but whether or not I want to. Call me idealistic or romantic or whatever, but I just might be looking for something more. In the meantime, a friend with benefits will have to suffice.
