Why This Must Be Read: Because it's so perfectly, brokenly them. It's Vala vulnerable and hurting and strong. It's Daniel pissy and lonely and fighting this thing with everything he has. UnabashedBird takes some of those moments from canon that could have blossomed, that could have sparked into something a little bit more with just a nudge and a tweak, then lets the whole thing take off mid-way through the last season and tames the rest to dance to her tune. I'm a sucker for believable 'this is how they could have got it together' fic, and this one is masterful.
He looks at her then, really looks at her, and she knows he is seeing all the cracks in her, all the places she is broken and doesn’t quite fit together anymore, all the things she tries to hide . . . Funny how, now that she starts to see them, the cracks in him look a lot like the cracks in her.
