Here I watched the reunion from the sidelines. I had been the one to lead the Sunnydale crew out of the SGC and into this little-used, but highly secure screening room of NORAD. It was a holding ‘room’ for unexpected visitors who arrived via the helipad who might be allowed inside. Dawn, who had barely been out of Xander’s sight, outran him in her rush over to the new arrivals. I noted with interest that she carefully avoided the blue, leather-clad lady who was more humanoid than human. So that was a HST.
Stopping short of the two males, Dawn thumped the shorter, bleached-blond on the chest. He looked familiar but I couldn’t place him. He said something I couldn’t make out and then they both laughed. The taller, dark-haired man looked on, gazing at her with a mixture of sadness and regret. Dawn ducked her head and said something that made both men look like the world had suddenly been pulled out from under them. The blond one grabbed Dawn in a fierce hug; he clearly didn’t intend to let go of her anytime soon. The other remained standing there, unmoving, and obviously in shock.
Xander strode forward. A few tense words were exchanged before Dawn wriggled out of Blondie’s grip and yelled, “ENOUGH! Arguing is not going to change anything!”
The three men looked at her with something akin to pride and yet something else as well. This Buffy that nobody would talk about must have been something if she was anything like her sister.
I shifted my attention to Major Finn, who was standing awkwardly on my left. He looked like he was holding himself back. Major Jefferson was grinning but trying to be discreet about it. He failed miserably. Then it hit me; we had been told that Mrs. Finn’s team had arrived with a few guests. Right. Finn’s anticipation at seeing his wife again was understandable. I wondered how he and his wife had ended up working on the same project; the military tended to frown on such things.
A female soldier broke off from the group, said something to a young-looking lieutenant who quickly saluted her and scuttled off toward the helicopter parked nearby. She then strode towards Major Finn who had begun to walk towards her. He placed his hands on her shoulders, and spoke to her quietly. She replied with a negative shake of her head. He then pulled her into an embrace, which ended in a kiss.
“So that’s the Mrs?” I guessed.
“Yes, sir,” the major said. We watched the couple as they broke apart, all business again. “Rumour has it, Sir, that they were married on a helicopter before a hostile drop,” Major Jefferson added with a grin before he walked off to join them.
I glared at the Major’s retreating back. How did they manage to get away with that one? I wondered and then I suddenly became aware of Carter’s presence at my side.
The blue woman purposefully strode towards us. “I am Illyria, the god king, and I wish to speak with the leader of the uniformed men.”
God king, huh? I expected that Daniel would have heard of her.
“Easy, Blue...play nice with the military folk,” Blondie’s voice dripped with sarcasm. He had casually wandered over but there was really nothing casual about him. Major Jefferson just as ‘casually’ followed him.
“And you are...?” I asked.
“Hostile 17, Sir,” Major Jefferson hissed.
“That’s right, mate.” He spoke coldly. His eyes flashed golden for a moment and I swear I saw his face flicker. I drew my weapon, as did several others. I remembered where I seen Blondie before he was on the tape from the Initiative. I’d seen him and the elder Summers fight of an army of those HST’s. They had saved a group of soldiers in the process. As a vampire, he was too dangerous to be running around without a leash; his escort would be armed with zats, not guns. My first instinct was to throw the lot of them into the brig. I would have to compromise and put them in VIP rooms with guards, but they would not have the run of the base. If I had my way, they would stay here, in this low security end of NORAD. There was no reason for them to even be in the SGC proper.
“SPIKE!” the taller man snapped, his voice full of authority. Spike growled but backed down.
“Shall I rip off his head?” The blue woman asked ‘Spike,’ in a very formal manner. It was as if she was unused to speaking or asking permission.
Spike smiled ferally. “As much as I would like that, no.”
I looked at the obviously inhuman woman: her hair and face tinged with deep bright blue, her violet eyes cold, calculating and curious. She was nothing like I’d ever seen before. HST seemed a far too broad a description for these things. Carter had complained during Finn’s briefing that categorizing every non-human, earth-borne hostile a HST would lead to problems. Like always, Carter had been right.
Illyria seemed to have taken a special interest in Daniel. She was looking at him like a specimen under a microscope and asked, “Why have you chosen such a weak form?”
“Pardon?” Daniel was thrown.
“Quondam - you left this reality after you created the human plague.”
“I’m sorry,” Daniel spoke, confused. “I think you must be mistaken.”
“Your shell houses your essence much as mine does, but yours is mortal. I could rip off your head and you would be helpless to stop me. The Quondam were worthy adversaries, it is a shame to see they have fallen so far.”
“Of course!” Maria, Finn’s so-called witch, exclaimed. “That would explain everything you are… Oh my goddess… It can’t be…It’s not possible!” Maria became extremely excited and began looking at Daniel in the same way Carter looked at naquada generators or motorbikes.
“What’s not possible?” I asked. I know I’m going not going to like the answer, no with the way that the blue HST and the witch are reacting.
“You weren’t always in your human form, were you?” Maria asked Daniel.
Oh Shit. The expression on Daniel’s face would have been quite amusing if this wasn’t so serious. Could they really tell that Daniel had been ascended? If so, how? “What, what do you mean?” Daniel stuttered.
Maria began to explain “Beings who exist -or have existed- outside of this reality and dimension require a physical form to interact with this reality. Usually, beings take over already existing physical forms or can be brought here for a limited time -and with limited powers- using special artefacts. There is another way but it requires a massive amount of power in order for a physical form to be created. Dr. Jackson may have a human, mortal form now, but at one time, he existed outside of this reality.”
“So, what is he?” Xander asked.
“I don’t know his blood work was clean. I thought it was just magical overload,” Maria rambled excitedly. Blood work? When did they get hold of Daniel’s blood?
“Quondam?” Dawn mused. “Quondam means ‘of times no longer existing’.”
“So he is an Old One.” Xander gave Daniel an appraising look. I don’t know whether or not Space Monkey passed the inspection.
“A bit scrawny for an Old One,” Blondie said with a tone of derision.
“You’re one of these Ancients aren’t you” Dawn accused, folding her arms across her chest. She looked so very much the teenager. It was odd since she had just translated an HST’s native language on the fly.
“I’m...I was...” Daniel stumbled for an explanation.
“Xander, Dawn, maybe we should..” Whatever Finn started to say, Dawn had a sudden realization that she couldn’t keep to herself.
“It’s you!” Dawn gasped. “You’re the Fallen One!”
Daniel stared at Dawn with a mixture of surprise and interest. “Why do you think that? Call me that?”
“Because,” she explained with a bit of giddy relief, “I’m the Key.”
