How to tell a true war story

Because fialleril  suggested it a while back, yesterday I went out and bought The Things They Carried, a collection of stories about a platoon of soldiers in Vietnam. It was a bad idea to read part of it right before bed last night. I had the most unsettling dreams. I don't remember much about them, but people's eyes were glowing green in the dark. Apparently I woke up yelling when the alarm went off.

The Things They Carried is terrifying, haunting and incredible all at once. I can't put it down. I'll probably wind up writing a reflection or a story in response or something once I'm done with it, because it's a book that won't let you just walk away.
