Hello. Asexuality exists.

It's been kind of a crappy week for aces in media. Between Moffat's poorly-thought-out comments regarding Sherlock via Twitter, the House brain-tumor-or-lies debacle, and now Tim Gunn catching all kinds of flak for being celibate (which is not the same thing as asexuality but gets many of the same unexpectedly nasty ( Read more... )

I thought the reaction to the Tim Gunn interview was really weird. The headline was something like "Tim Gunn Hasn't Had Sex for 29 Year!" making it out to be a somehow astonishing thing, and the comments were all "Oh, that isn't normal, sex is a biological imperative for all mammals yadda yadda," "he should get therapy and get his hormones checked, poor thing," or, my personal favorite, "liar." Really?

I read an interview a while back in which he described himself as "kind of asexual," so I must confess I'd hoped he was, just so I could give people an example of a successful, well-adjusted person who's inclined that way -- somebody to look up to on that front. But why is this even such a huge deal? Tim's business is his own business and he is basically the greatest, so let's all just bask in his perpetually-classy, immaculately-dressed awesomeness and attend to our own lives, please.

Oh, Moffat. In a recent interview, he pretty much dismissed any reading of Sherlock as asexual or gay and said asexuality was a boring option for fictional characters because it essentially defuses any romantic tension that would otherwise be allowed to exist. Er, no? Some of the most fascinating fics I've ever read in that fandom deal with ace!Holmes, and surprise! There's even romance on occasion. Here's a pretty good article that takes apart Moffat's response: http://jeyradan.tumblr.com/post/16190891473/lets-talk-about-asexuality-the-bbcs-sherlock

Okay, I'm done. I should probably go do more homework and less random emoting.

Yeah all those comments about Tim Gunn are SO STRANGE and uncalled for. That's what I mean where people LITERALLY DON'T GET some people could just not have sex, for decades or ever, and not really care or feel like they are missing out. REALLY IT HAPPENS! I know it's hard to believe! Except not really!

Why do people even care about this stuff?

On Wiki (WHERE ALL THINGS ARE TRUE) it actually does say he identifies as asexual, so you can live that dream! I had no idea. I just knew that heartbreak story of his and that he had never dated anyone after that person, I figured maybe that was part of the celibacy pact he had with himself.

I LOVE YOU TIM GUNN NO MATTER WHAT AND PEOPLE NEED TO STEP OFF (also I hope someone mends your broken heart some day ; _ ;).

I am up way, way too late but I have to go read that link (note from the future: I went and read it). All I can do is laugh more and roll my eyes. First off, Sherlock in canon is basically asexual, even if they didn't have a name for it back then. Right, am I insane? Honestly I think he is MORE interesting that way. It makes him even more of an enigma and completely inscrutable, like he truly is pure intellect which is why there is more tension when certain emotions rise up and he has to deal with them- particularly romance! When both people are sexual beings, you know the outcome (EL OH EL COME) but when one party isn't and the other is, that's interesting. That's different.

AND it's hilarious because I am talking through all of that imagining Sherlock being ace and Holmes being into him and here Moffat is saying being gay isn't even an option. El oh el! Please. What world and canon are Sherlock and Holmes NOT totally an old married couple. Whatever Moffat, haha, jesus.
