The first week of this new mission aboard the USS Enterprise, and things were officially getting dull. Kirk's first week on the ship had been full of things happening, never a dull moment. And while this week had had its fun times, the whole crew needed a break from the monotony of day-to-day. (Or, Jim did, and he assumed that the crew thought similarly to him even when they didn't, so.)
So. Kirk spent some time figuring out a way, and the thought hit him - party. More accurately, turning the officers' lounge into a bar, dim lights, some music, and all the Earth alcohol (and synthehol) he and Bones had convinced the crew to stash away before they'd left Earth again.
The ship was set on auto-pilot for the night, some of the newer crew were assigned the main bridge positions so that the main officers - Kirk's core crew, the people who'd been with him from the beginning of the Enterprise - would be able to come join him. He left a few minutes early to set up, taking stock of all the alcohol Janice had been able to find him, installing the light program he'd written so the floor would resemble something of a dance floor, clearing couches and tables to the edges of the room so they could be still be used (bonus being that they could be used for privacy) and be out of the way if anyone wanted to dance.
Now all there was to do was pour himself a glass (he'd borrowed all the cups from the kitchen deck) of a whiskey sour, sit back on one of the couches, and wait.
