Summary :: When he wakes, there is a light in his eyes.
When he wakes, there is a light in his eyes.
Even sleep-dimmed and weariness-dulled, it is still there, a shining thing framed by darkly-circled skin and miasma-swirls of lashes and hair. He spares just a heartbeat to watch the boy, feels the second beat constrict with something that could be love or hope or hurt or pride, and chooses not to question that light's source.
It could be a reflection, he knows; a mirror image of himself, a figurative passing of the torch as he leads him into dawn. Or the boy could be lit from within, not with the firelust of destruction and rage, but the sweet simplicity of home like candles flickering behind windowpanes.
Or, perhaps, he thinks, the two are one and the same, and perhaps it does not matter either way.
And at least he can fade knowing that the boy is warm.
