real life conundrum

Let's pretend.

The woman is twenty something, married and 7 months pregnant. Husband is a junkie and there is a divorce order going on for some time now, yet to be concluded.

She has recently been diagnosed with cancer, which causes problems with eating and breathing. It is not terminal stage, is curable with chemo-radiotherapy. The drugs and the radiation she needs may cause problems with the child, but with current technologies and knowledge, the child can be spared.

On examination the child was found to be already in distress and has growth failure. Meaning it is small for his age, may not reach term, may be born but not make it, or may be born and live.

For any anticancer treatment in pregnant women, approval from both parents is needed. Unless it is a critical condition for the mother. As for any obstructions in breathing, she is under watch.

The husband does not permit for any treatment to his wife. He is described as non-conciliatory.

Now, what would you do? If you were the woman? If you were the husband? If you were the physician?
