summary: Kara has left the military, and is settled into a pretty comfortable life. But, there's just one thing wrong. She's lonely.
Kara picks up the pace, sweating and panting, but still going close to top speed. She glances down at Lucy and smiles. Yup, still got it, she thinks to herself. A second later her jaw drops as Lucy lays her ears back, growls, and puts on a burst of speed, tearing away down the path and towards the house. As she rounds the corner Kara hears Lucy barking triumphantly then she can see the dog standing on the front porch, tail wagging as she waits at the door. If dogs were capable of smirking, Kara's sure Lucy would be.
Lucy barks once more then turns and scratches at the door eagerly. She knows she's won the race and what's waiting for her inside. Turning back around she barks again, a little louder this time.
"The world hates a show off,Luc," Kara pants as she mounts the steps. Unlocking the door she's almost knocked over as the dog barrels past her and into the house. Shaking her head Kara follows Lucy into the kitchen and stops at the refrigerator to get a bottle of water. Lucy scratches at the pantry door and whimpers.
"Hang on a minute will you?" Kara says tiredly. She opens the bottle and begins to drink , enjoying the cool flood in her throat. A loud, impatient bark comes from behind her followed by louder scratching, a growl, and another bark. With the bottle tilted all the way back, Kara walks over to the pantry, opens it and grabs the dog treat. She stops drinking long enough to frown at Lucy."You're getting awfully bossy, you know."
Lucy's ears tilt back and she puts a paw on Kara's thigh. She whimpers and licks her lips, turning those big black eyes up at Kara. She wags her tail and whimpers again.
"Oh, ok," Kara relents. "Just remember your manners, alright?" Smiling, she gives the dog her treat and pets her affectionately. "Now go play for awhile. I'm going to shower and get back to work." Lucy, still chewing on her snack, heads off towards the back of the house. Kara goes upstairs and showers. Putting her robe on she goes back downstairs, into her office and opening the notebook she sits down and picks up where she left off. After rereading the last few paragraphs she gets back into the flow and the words start pouring from her pen. Once engrossed the world around her disappears and it's just her, the notebook, the pen, and the words.
Barking from the kitchen breaks her attention and she sighs impatiently. When she looks up at the clock she's shocked to see it's almost seven o'clock. Fours hours have past without her knowing it. Lucy appears in the office door and sits down just outside. "C'mon baby. You can come in, I'm done now," Kara says and pats her leg. Lucy comes in and jumps up to give Kara a lick. Kara laughs and pats her head.
"You know, I think I might take a little time off. I say we could use a break for a few days, how about you?" She looks back at the notebook, nods and keeps petting Lucy. "Yeah, a few days off sounds nice to me, too."
Lucy barks.
"What? The painting? Oh don't worry about that. I'm almost done and the deadline's still a little over two months away," Kara replies absently. "I can get that done in plenty of time before the studio comes to get it." Lucy lays her head in Kara's lap and stares up at her, then lets a snort out. "That?" Kara asks nodding towards the notebook. "There's no rush on that." Nodding to herself she makes her decision. "Yeah, a few days off sounds like just the thing."
Reaching for the phone she dials Karl's number and waits as the phone rings. She's sure Karl and Sharon won't mind having her there for a few days, they hadn't been around each other in a long time and she misses them. The phone stops ringing and is picked up.
"Agathon residence, this is Hera speaking."
"Hi Curly Top," Kara says playfully.
"Kara! Hi!" Hera replies with a laugh, then her voice becomes
suspicious. "You're not calling to say you can't come to my party are you?"
"No,of course not. I promised didn't I?" Kara answers. Hera giggles.
"Yeah,you promised."
"Is your Mama or Daddy there?"
"Daddy's still working," Hera says, the tone of her voice makes it obvious she's none too pleased about it. "Dumb ship, things keep breaking on it and he wants to stay to make sure they get fixed."
"Oh well, that's kind of his job, baby. Can I talk to your Mama?"
"Yes, hang on please," Hera says. "Maaaaaaaaama! Kara's on the phone for you!" She yells, loud enough to make Kara jerk away form the phone. There's a loud clunk as she drops the phone. The sound of running steps come faintly and she picks it up again. "Sorry Kara, she's coming. So, you're still going to be here for my party?"
"Yes, I'm still coming," Kara laughs.
"Yay! Here's Mama," the girl says and runs off.
"Did she blow your ear out?" Sharon asks, a smile in her voice.
"Just a little," Kara replies."At least she doesn't shriek anymore."
"Try being here for more than a few hours, you'll hear her shriek plenty," Sharon replies deadpan. "So anyway, what's up?"
"Yeah, hey I was wondering if you and Karl didn't mind, maybe I could visit for a while. I mean not just for Hera's party, but for a few days after that."
"Of course you can visit," Sharon says in a don't be silly tone. "We think you've been couped up in that house for too long anyway. Always working and barely staying in contact."
"I know, I know. I realized today that I haven't done anything but work for a long time now."
"Well then that settles it," Sharon said. "We'll get the spare room ready and you'll come stay for a while." A soft laugh comes over the line and Sharon coos softly at the voice. "I know someone else will be happy to see you too."
"How's she doing?" Kara asks.
"Getting bigger everyday. She's walking now, took her first steps a week or so ago."
"Well that's great Sharon! So instead of crawling away, soon she'll be running away from you," Kara says with a laugh.
"Oh, don't remind me, please!" Sharon laughs back. "See you in a few days?"
"Yeah. And, Sharon?"
"Huh?"
"Thanks," Kara says gratefully.
"Don't thank me yet. I'm sure by the third day with this bunch you'll be screaming to go back to that house of yours up there in the hills," Sharon says jokingly.
"We'll see. Thanks again, see you in a few days."
"We'll be waiting. All of us," Sharon replies. "See you soon, Kara."
"Bye."
"Bye."
Hanging up the phone she pats Lucy again and leans down to place a kiss on the dog's head. "There, that's done. Looks like we'll be taking a little vacation, Luc." Gently nudging the dog back on the floor she stands up and looks around her office. "Lords know I need it, too."
Walking out of the room she shuts the light off and goes into the kitchen to make a late dinner before bed.
