setting: several years after the Colonials find Earth.
summary: Kara has left the military, and is settled into a pretty comfortable life. But, there's just one thing wrong. She's lonely.
The sound of music comes from an upstairs room, loud but gentle. A slow, sweeping piece on piano, with no other accompaniment. From underneath the rhythm of the sonata-esque sound can be heard the softer noise of a brush running along canvas.
The painter stands barefoot wearing only a button down white shirt and black underwear. She guides the paintbrush along the lines, shading in the face lightly, ever so lightly. She pauses, tilts her head to one side, then dips the brush into the paint once more and continues to shade. After a few more strokes she stands back and nods.
"There, that's enough for today," Kara says to herself. She gives the painting one more appraising glance and smiles. "Yeah, I think I've done enough today." She turns and leaves, reminding herself to come back before bed and cover it, that should be enough time for it to dry. Glancing down at the floor she wiggles her toes, looking at the drops of paint that have fallen on several of them. "Well, at least it's better than last time,"she says to herself. Yesterday she'd spilled a small bottle of red paint all over her feet and it took a good while to get it off. Things like that are just one of the reasons this room-her studio for lack of a better word- is floored entirely in thick, absorbent sheets.
Leaving the room she heads downstairs, stopping in the kitchen on the way to her office in the rear of the house and heats some tea. Steaming cup in hand she enters the room and turns on the computer. The room itself is simple. White walls, black carpet. The walls are sparsely decorated, only a few pictures here and there. There's a couch off to the left as one enters, old, worn, but comfortable. This is where she spends a good deal of her time, reading and writing about her days, what she's thinking, what she's feeling.
Kara reaches out and turns on the computer while taking a sip. She winces, too hot. Setting the cup aside she signs on and begins to look through her messages. Nothing unusual. Junk mail, something from her agent, one from her manager. She reads them and sends out the usual replies.
I'm fine, and don't worry, things are coming along fine. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but I've been working on things. Talk to you soon. -Kara
As she finishes the ones she wants to answer and deletes the junk mail the ding of an incoming message chimes from the computer's speaker. Looking back at the in box on the screen she smiles as she sees the address. Clicking it open she takes another, more cautious, sip of her tea. The message opens and she begins to read.
Kara,
Hey 'buck, how are you? Good I hope. I tried calling last week but I got your machine. I saw you called back. Sorry, we were out with the girls. Anyway, we'd all like to see you and were wondering if you'd come over next weekend. You know why I trust. So let me know.
-Karl
Kara laughs softly. Yes, she knows what next week is. But she's not quite sure about how she feels about going anywhere, there's so much to do. Sighing, she clicks the 'reply' button and writes back.
Karl,
Don't worry about missing my call, I know how busy you guys are. Gongratulations on your promotion, I'm proud of you. And how does it feel to be the C.O. of the old Bucket? I'm not surprised though, who better to command her than someone who knows her inside and out? As far as next week, I'm sorry, I don't think I can make it. I've been swamped with deadlines and getting pressured from all sides. Tell the Birthday Girl sorry for me, but I'll be mailing her present tomorrow to make sure it gets there in time. But I'll see you guys soon, I promise.
- Kara
She clicks send and stands up, stretching and yawning. It's 8:30 and it's been a full day. Now that everything's taken care of, she just wants to enjoy a hot bath and crawl into bed. From the back door comes the sound of scratching and a soft, insistant whine.
"Oh,gods! Lucy, I'm sorry!," she exclaims as she runs to the door and lets in the dog. Lucy patters into the house and jumps up, front paws on Kara's thighs. "I forgot you were out there all day. Can you ever forgive me?" Lucy's response is a small yip and a lick on the cheek. "Ok, good," Kara laughs. She walks back to her office, Lucy not far behind, and notices Karl has sent another message. She clicks it and reads.
Kara,
C'mon, we haven't seen you in a while. And I know every excuse you'll use, so you've forced me to play dirty.
-Karl
"What on Earth does he mean 'play dirty'?" she asks Lucy, patting her head. In the next instant the phone rings, and she rolls her eyes. The number on the i.d. screen is K. Agathon. Picking it up she smiles as he cuts her off.
"Hey," he says in an overly friendly voice.
"Hey,"she replies. "And how are you gonna play dirty?"
"Heh, hang on,"he answers. The sound of the phone moving from one hand to another fills Kara's ear and then a soft, sweet, and excited voice comes over the line.
"Hi, Kara!" The voice is of Karl's oldest daughter, Hera.
"Hi sweetheart! How are you?" Kara asks with a laugh.
"I'm sad," the girl says slowly. "Daddy says you're not coming to my birthday party."
Cursing Karl for indeed playing dirty she takes in a breath and exhales. "Oh sweetie, I want to, it's just I'm really busy and I'm not sure-"
"Puh leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzz," Hera responds with a whine. Kara can practically see those big, brown puppy eyes and the lower lip pooched out in a pout. "I haven't seen you in forever and I miiiiisssssss you. Please come? Please, please please?"
"Oh, well Hera, I-"
"Puh leeeeeeeeeeeez with a great big hug and kiss?" Hera asks. "I love you, Kara," she adds with extra sweetness dripping in her voice.
Laughing Kara nods and relents. "Ok, honey. Ok, I'll be there." She smiles as Hera squeals with delight. "Love you too, baby. Now put Daddy on,ok?"
"OK! Bye bye Kara!" Hera makes a kissing sound and then hands the phone back to her father. He has the nerve to chuckle into the line.
"That was a low, dirty frakkin trick Agathon. Does Sharon know you did this?"
"It was her idea," Karl replies with a laugh. Sharon's laugh comes ringing clearly through the line. "See?"
"Both of you are terrible. But fine, I'll be there." She tries to sound angry, but the sound of Hera's cheers and Karl and Sharon's laughs make it hard. "I'm not going to forget this, you know."
"Yeah, we know. But whatever you come up with will be worth the punishment. See you next week?"
"Yeah," Kara says. She smiles and shakes her head. Maybe being out of the house and away from work won't be such a bad idea. "Next week. Now if you don't mind, I have a painting to cover and bath to take."
"Alright. Take care, see you next week," Karl says. Sharon yells goodbye in the background, then the line goes dead.
Lucy barks and licks Kara's hand, looking up at her with a wagging tail. Kara smiles down at her and rubs her behind the ear. "C'mon Luc, time for bed."
