kwoooooopi 1 Hour Writing Challenge, 4th Round.

fandom: Super Junior
pairing: would have been ShiHae. Maybe?
theme: magic; catch: it doesn't quite work like it should..
summary: Kibum decided that it was better not to ask. It just…it just was.
notes: I didn't reach the point of the actual prompt, hurray \8D/

It was the smell that first captured Kibum’s attention. A smell that was both strange and simply unpleasant. He followed his nose into the kitchen, which wasn’t entirely surprising; in his experience, almost all strange or questionable or just plain bad smells came from the kitchen - or Eunhyuk’s room, he thought with a slight snigger.

He was met with the sight of someone (and Kibum could recognise him already just from the slightly wild of his brown hair) hunched over…over whatever it was that was making that smell. There were all sorts of things scattered across the counter, and at first glance they looked like they might just simply be ingredients, but when he caught sight of a tube of toothpaste and some feathers, Kibum changed his mind. Rather quickly, too.

He almost didn’t want to, but his curiousty overcame the urge to just back out of the kitchen, and he took several steps closer, peering in over a hunched shoulder.

“What are you doing?” He asked, and then decided that perhaps he should rephrase his question. “What the hell are you doing?”

Donghae - Kibum’s guess had been correct, and at any other time he might have thought about that a little more - jumped, obviously startled, and turned to peer up at Kibum, wide-eyed and looking very much like a deer-caught-in-headlights. There were streaks of what might have looked like flour on Donghae’s face, and Kibum thought he could smell something vaguely fruity, too.

“What do you think I’m doing?” Donghae asked, sounding all together a little too innocent to Kibum’s ears.

“That’s not an answer.” He leaned in closer, peering down at the…what the hell was it, anyway? It looked like a huge, strange-smelling concoction of almost everything available all throw into a large saucepan and left to boil. And now that it was starting to, it really, really did smell. “Seriously, what is this? It looks poisonous.”

Donghae looked offended. “It is not! Oh, I almost forgot,” and before Kibum could even ask (and maybe it was best not to, really), he had plucked a couple of feathers and dropped them into the strange mix. It was starting to turn blue.

“I read about it in this book I found, okay?” Donghae said, to the increasingly dubious expression drawn across Kibum’s face just then. He ran a hand back through his hair, making it look even more wild. “And there were a bunch of peoples stories about how well it worked. But it won’t work if you distract me from getting it right,” Giving Kibum a stern - stern for Donghae, anyway - look, Donghae pushed him away, gesturing for him to please leave now or else.

As he left the kitchen, he heard Donghae mumbling to himself, and though he only caught several words, he was almost certain he’d heard ‘potion’ and ‘magic’ and something that sounded worryingly like, ‘I wonder if this will make him kiss me’.

Kibum decided that it was better not to ask. It just…it just was. A standard rule he had learnt over the years to always apply to Donghae. Always.

He considered, briefly, about warning the other residents of the dorm, but decided against it. He was almost certain he could smell tabasco sauce and something else he would rather not be able to identify.

“Kibum, have you seen my cola?” Shiwon looked vaguely distressed as he approached Kibum, eyes still moving around the room in search for his missing drink. “I was sure I left the bottle right here.”

It was busy, and it was noisy too, with everyone backstage all trying to finish getting ready. And Kibum had absolutely no idea, nor did he care, where Shiwon’s drink had managed to get to. Besides, he was kind of busy, trying to figure out when and why, this picture of Heechul had turned up on his phone. And why it was now his wallpaper. He’d been certain not to leave his cellphone unguarded whenever Heechul was around. Ever. So it was quite the mystery.

“Sorry, hyung, no idea,” he answered, non-committal, busy trying to remember what he’d been doing the day this picture had been taken. Had he even seen Heechul, that day?

“Oh, okay. Ijust-”

“Shiwonnie~ I think I found something of yours!”

Kibum looked up to see Donghae, one arm draped companionably around Shiwon’s waist, waving an almost full bottle of coca cola in front of his face.

He was about to shrug it away and prepare to ignore the impending scolding Donghae was about to receive, when something caught Kibum’s eye. He looked at the bottle in Shiwon’s hands - after having just been snatched from Donghae’s - and he could have almost sworn he’d seen a…but no. That wasn’t right. That was just too weird.

And then he noticed the smile on Donghae’s face, despite the scolding, and saw the eager way he watched as Shiwon sipped from the bottle.

It was a little worrying, to think that Kibum might have just seen a tiny piece of feather floating around in the drink. It was even more worrying to think about why. And more worrying still, to think
