The first time he meets Donghae, Kibum is on his knees.
He looks up suspiciously at the approaching boy and wonders what else he’s in for now; he already feels humiliated enough.
“Are you okay?” The older boy reaches a hand out towards him and quickly Kibum scuttles away, the movement awkward and ungainly, but effective enough.
His eyes are wide as he stares up at the older boy and he remains silent, heart already starting to race just a little in anticipation.
Donghae looks at him but doesn’t step any closer, just keeps his hand held out towards Kibum. “I saw you fall,” he offers a moment later, and Kibum thinks from the look in his eyes that the older boy saw what really happened.
“My knees,” he finally says after a long pause. He can feel the scrape of raw skin through the thin material of his trousers from where he hit the ground.
“You’re hurt?” Donghae’s eyes are round and full of concern as he crouches down next to Kibum. “Let me look.” He actually sounds friendly so Kibum doesn’t shy away from him this time as Donghae leans in to inspect his knees.
There are just some scratches on the left knee, nothing else, but the other is a raw red and bleeding from where the skin has been scraped off.
Without a word, Donghae pulls a wrinkled hanky from a pocket, moistens the tip with his tongue, and dabs carefully at the wound, wiping the blood from Kibum’s knee.
Kibum sucks in a sharp breath of air and tries not to flinch; it stings, but he’s supposed to be a big boy now, and a scraped knee should be nothing to him anymore.
Donghae is surprisingly gentle as he wipes the blood away, and this strikes Kibum as strange, he thought all older boys were generally bullies.
“This is what my mother does.” Donghae explains as he looks up at Kibum. The surprise is probably evident on Kibum’s face because a moment later, Donghae smiles at him, and Kibum forgets all about the ache in his bleeding knee.
