Duo led Wufei over to the small group that was gathered near the base of the grand staircase of the huge ballroom inside of Relena’s estate. “Chang Wufei (Wufei was amazed that Duo had determined this important enough to introduce him correctly), this is Relena Peacecraft.”
Wufei looked into the soft blue eyes of Relena Peacraft and then bowed shortly over her outstretched hand. “It’s nice to finally meet you, Miss Peacecraft.”
“It’s nice to finally meet you to, Mr. Chang. I think I’ve now had the pleasure of meeting all of you. Are you enjoying the festivities?” Her smile was warm and her eyes sparkled. Wufei thought that she must be rather proud of this party and everything that had been accomplished to bring them to this point.
“I would rather be out of this suit,” he told her, gesturing to the black suit he was wearing, “but the company hasn’t been a complete waste.”
She laughed and Wufei decided that it wasn’t one of those trilling laughs most females seemed to have; no, Relena’s laugh was a natural one that seemed to concur with his own opinions. “Mr. Chang, I usually couldn’t agree more, but allow us this one night to be uncomfortable and look really good too. Tomorrow you can go back to jeans and t-shirts and I can go back to my usual clothing.”
Wufei thought that maybe she was flirting and maybe that he didn’t mind, but he really tried to push that thought aside. “It was nice to finally meet you, Miss Peacecraft.”
“Please,” she said as he went to leave her and her companions, “call me Relena.”
“All right then, Relena. I’ll let you get back to your duties.” They exchanged a glance and Wufei offered a tentative smile before walking back to his table with Duo.
“Am I totally mistaken, or did you just smile for Miss Relena Peacecraft?” Duo asked, almost incredulous.
“You didn’t see anything,” Wufei said evenly. Duo just laughed and went to go talk to Heero.
He talked with a few people here and there for the rest of the evening. He talked with Sally about his latest position inside Preventers, he spoke with Lady Une about the organization itself, Heero wanted to ask him about a new computer model and what he thought of it….
But every time his eyes were not focused on whomever he was speaking with they went back to Relena: Relena dancing with a senator, Relena speaking with Duo and genuinely laughing as he told a uproarious joke, sitting with Lady Une and sipping champagne. The woman seemed to just draw people to her and he realized just why OZ and Mariemaia had wanted her to be their spokesperson. She was just charismatic. People wanted to be around her.
When he went to give her his goodbye she stopped talking with a Senator and walked with him to the door. “Thank you so much for coming, Wufei. It was an unexpected pleasure.”
Wufei was surprised but he didn’t let it show. “Pleasure was all mine, Relena.”
He kissed her hand and left, not looking back to see what she had thought of that.
His phone rang in his apartment a week later. He picked it up and wondered who was calling him this early in the morning. “Hello?”
“Please hold for Miss Peacecraft.”
Wufei’s eyebrows arched and he waited, curious as to what Relena wanted. When she finally picked up he could hear how weary she was. “Wufei? This is Relena.”
“It’s nice to hear from you Relena, but why are you calling me at six in the morning?” The way Wufei saw it, just because she was one of the most important people on Earth or the colonies didn’t mean she could wake him up early. Her laugh startled him.
“Sorry! Sometimes I don’t remember the time difference, only that I need to talk to someone. Listen, I know we didn’t get to talk much at the party, but I was wondering if…” her sigh was audible and so was the nervousness in her voice, “I’m going to be in your area next week. I was wondering if you were free for dinner? On Friday night maybe?”
Wufei was frozen where he stood. “Are you asking me out on a date, Relena?”
She surprised him with a coy question. “What if I was? Would you say yes?”
Wufei wondered if Dorothy Catalonia was prodding her over in Brussels. “Where are you staying? I will pick you up at seven.”
He could hear the smile in her voice. He had no clue what he was doing. Were his hands sweating?
“I can’t tell you that over the phone but I can email it to you through secure lines.”
He smirked. He wasn’t surprised. It must be hard to be as young as Relena was and still have to have caretakers around her all the time. “That would be fine.”
“Well then, I’ll let you go. See you next Friday?”
Wufei wished someone could reassure him he was doing the right thing. “Friday.”
He hung up the phone without saying goodbye and then stared at the thing as it sat on his desk. Without thinking he dialed up Duo and Heero.
Five minutes later he hung up the phone, face red and head steaming. Duo’s raucous laughter echoed in his ears for hours afterward.
