They sit in silence in an old restaurant in Prague; it's their anniversary, and the first time since Sevogda that they've seen each other. She sips her wine, studying his features in the candlelight and thinks, distractedly, he's aged well.
He raises his glass in salute, and she smiles. "How is Nadia?"
"The same." A sigh. "The doctors aren't sure what else to do."
Irina looks away; she knows there's nothing that can be done.
"Irina, is she--?"
She shakes her head. Better to let him think of her only as Sydney's sister. He doesn't need to grieve another daughter.
