He realizes a restless energy has been building up inside him since that afternoon on the roof, and heads to the gym in the hopes of releasing some of it. (He'll try anything to forget, and he's already discovered that alcohol doesn't help.)
He's at the punching bag until his knuckles are bleeding, but still he can't stop hitting it. He hates Kate for dying, hates Ari for killing her but, most of all, hates himself because he couldn't save her.
When his strength is gone, he falls to his knees, and his blood reminds him how red Kate's was.
