The last thing Donna Troy expected, when she fell onto the couch, after a particularly arduous day, was to find herself besides a speedster in a familiar bright yellow costume. But her life has always been full of surprises. In comparison, this isn’t honestly all that peculiar.

‘Hey! I-what-’

‘Hi..’

‘You shouldn’t sneak up on a girl like that…’ Donna blinks, her nose wrinkling. She doesn’t bother to ask how he got in. Speedsters are often disturbingly efficient. ‘Um… honey, what’s that smell?’

‘Sorry, I was in the sewers.’

‘The sewers?’

‘Uhuh. With Robin.’

‘Oh,’ Donna has to smile at that. She can’t help it, the name is tinged with so many memories and… interesting mental images. ‘Of course.’

‘Just I waswonderingcanItalktoyou?’

Donna has learned to be patient. ‘Of course you can. Go right ahead.’

‘Um… that’s just it, I’m not sure how to explain…’

‘Well, you could always start by telling me exactly what you and Robin were doing in the Gotham Sewer System.’

He vibrates uncomfortably in a way which tells her No, he definitely can’t tell her that. Something is up. It’s a Robin Thing. Or maybe it’s a Kid Flash thing. Or both.

‘Okay, then.. .this is about robin, right?’

‘It’s complicated… it’d take too long for me to explain,’ he blinks slowly enough for her to see it. ‘…do you have soda?’

‘By all means, help yourself.’

Donna has four less cans of soda in the refrigerator by the time she’s followed him to the kitchen. He’s clutching a can and sitting on her table, swinging his legs at unnatural speed. It’s difficult not to laugh, because Wally, while not having the best eating manners in the world, was never quite like that. Though he did have a tendency for high-velocity fidgeting, he didn’t virtually inhale food and drink. The thought brings back more memories, these ones not quite as brightening or worthy of smiles. They do, however, still involve speedsters.

Much of her life does. It’s a comforting thought, but at present… worrying.

Bart hiccups.

‘I should tell you…’ he mutters, ‘but I promised Tim I’d keep it quiet after I helped get him down there and I tried talking to Batgirl because she already knows so it didn’t really matter but she couldn’t think how to fix it either and everything’s really, really messed up and I don’t know what to do about it. because it’s Dick, y’see, he - robin - he can’t stop thinking about how he… he won’t let go.’

She knows just how much effort it’s taking for him to talk sat a speed she can understand. He’s still slipping on his words.

‘It’s okay, honey,’ she said quietly. ‘just tell me, go down whre? Where did you do?’

‘I… I can’t say,’ Bart screws up his eyes, angry. At himself, mostly. Kid Flash suddenly looks up at her, eyes amber bright. ‘He wants Dick back, doesn’t he?’

‘I know. So do I,’ Donna mumbles through clenched teeth. She knows this is not the time to try. There’s been too much of that in the last year, anyhow. ‘Things… change,’ she added, looking at him through the glittering of her hair. ‘Sometimes for the worst, and… people can’t adjust.’

‘You died, what’s it like?’ he asks, with extraordinary bluntness. There’s Wally, again.

‘I… I couldn’t tell you, it’s too hard to put into words I just… it’s mostly… questions, now,’ questions like why did you have to do it too? What happened? Was this how it felt for you, when it happened to me? She smiles. ‘Like I said. things change.’

‘Do you think Robin is crazy?’

Donna, who really doesn’t quite understand the question, isn’t entirely sure how to answer. So she dodges it. ‘I… I don’t know what you…’

‘I think he is,’ Kid Flash said quietly.
