When Neji had accepted the proposal with little more then a sigh Hinata was surprised to say the least. She had wanted to ask him then why he had accepted so easily but was called away to teach her sister how to make a special blend of tea.
He had bowed and went back to training, leaving her to stare at his back in wonder before going with the maid.
A week later she had passed the test and became a Konoha Jounin.
Now she was so busy with wedding preparations - because they really were getting married, she still couldn’t believe it - and the wedding wasn’t but a month away. A month to get to “know” each other better. A month say goodbye to their single life. A month to get rid of old crushes and focus on the them as a “them”.
He had sat by silently, watching as she went from shop to shop for a new obi or to Ino’s flower shop for the perfect flowers. He spent his days training; his mind more focused on what was to happen in three weeks time, and never really got anything done.
So, today he was going to ask her out. A formal date… and he couldn’t dread it more. They had been close as children but this; this took it to a whole new level. Not that he minded, no, he wasn’t complaining at all, he was more worried about what she may think.
Her eyes had widened, surprise etched into her features, before she smiled and asked when he wanted to leave. He had been so shocked that he forgot to close his mouth and quickly snapped it shut at her giggles.
“Ne-Neji-nissan? Wh-Where do you want to go?”
He cringed, if they were going to be married then why did she keep connecting him with an older brother?
“Wherever you want to go Hinata-sama.”
It was her turn to cringe, she had thought that they were getting so where yet he still spoke to her so formally.
“Wo-would you li-like to go for a walk? We can go see Hokage-sama’s garden,” and this time she added as almost an afterthought, “i-if you’d like to that is.”
She quickly hid her face behind her bangs, trying to hide the forming blush.
He laughed and she looked up, blushing face and all. His hand came to his face, trying to block the chuckles but failing miserably.
She blinked and then laughed as well as he led the way.
“So wh-what was fu-funny?”
“You, Hinata.”
They both stopped, he blinked, and she blinked again.
“Wh-what did I do? Ma-maybe I can do it again.”
She didn’t even bother to hide her blush this time, already having noticed a similar one on her cousin’s face. He didn’t answer and a moment later they found themselves in the public garden of the fifth Hokage.
