Spring 1979 - Hawai’i
The limousine carrying triplets Michael, Eric, and Brandi Masters’s home from school, pulled up the drive. They saw their Uncle Ben’s truck, but also noticed an unfamiliar truck parked in the drive. A familiar feeling stirred in Brandi, one that she hadn’t felt that strongly in nearly five years. She thought she knew who might be there visiting Ben.
Going into the house, the triplets talked animatedly, not thinking about the fact Brandi couldn’t hear. She had lost her hearing in 1848 due to a beating given her by the only person she had ever been afraid of in the few million years she had been living. They were full-blood Kiowa Indian, or so they were told. All three were very special, had magical type powers, though Brandi was the strongest of the three. For Brandi’s hearing, her Indian grandfather, her mother’s father, had taught her when she lost it to hear with both her heart and mind, not with the ears that no longer worked. On their way upstairs, they went between speaking in English, sign language, and their own Ancient language, not staying with any particular language.
After dropping her books in her room, Brandi ran downstairs and stood just outside the door to the living room. She smiled when she saw Chris Larabee talking to Ben. That smile turned to a frown when she ‘heard’ him say “We’re shipping out next week.”
“For where?”
“Can’t say. And have no idea how long I’ll be gone. I’m more worried about what Dee will say,” Chris replied with a laugh.
“Yeah, I can understand that. Speaking of which, they should be home from school.”
Coming from around the corner, Brandi startled them both by saying, “We are, Ben.” Looking at Chris, Brandi’s heart beat faster, and she felt her insides start to melt. She had missed this man.
Looking at her, Chris smiled. He forgot how young she was. He had known her for a very long time. He suddenly forgot what he wanted to tell her. He hadn’t seen her in almost five years and even with knowing she would get more beautiful, he was struck by the beauty he saw in her right then. He knew they had a connection, but he was really feeling it then. His heart rate was matching hers and he had to wipe his hands on his pants, feeling his palms getting sweaty.
Finding his voice, he said, “I’m glad your home Dee. I’m stationed at Pearl, but as you may have heard, I’m being shipped out next week.”
“I did hear that. I don’t suppose you can tell me where to?”
“Nope, sorry, babe. Not even you.”
They walked outside and started down toward the beach, holding hands. She looked up at him, leaning into him, not wanting him to leave. He put his arms around her and held onto her, feeling their connection even stronger now and never wanting it to end.
