The science fiction/fantasy bookclub I am a part of had an interesting discussion the other night. Talking about books that move you in a very profound way. What I mean by that is this. Something that you have invested time and although the book/series was finally going to end, you had that rare emotion of half dread/half excitement.
This not a common occurance (although I wish it were), but it is why I love to read.
I don't know if it is that way for everyone, but for me reading is about going to another world and getting involved in the story. The same way someone can with a great novel.
So, here is my question for everyone.
What are the book(s) that have touched you in a profound way. And why? It could be anything from a series, to a comic book. Who knows. :)
For me there are two.
1. The Dark Tower by Stephen King. Another series that spanned seven novels and over twenty years. I first read read the series when The Wastelands came out in paperback in around 1993. I fell in love with the series and then had to wait all the different gaps between the books. If SK had not almost died, he may have never finished the book. I remember reading the last book (The Dark Tower) and being excited and horrified that it was over. To this day I still do not know what I though the ending (don't want to ruin it for anyone), but I do remember being drained afterwords.
2. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Obviously it was a series that spanned over seven novels and a few years. I remember reading the last book and having the same type of feeling I had when I finished the Dark Tower. I had grown to care so much about Harry and the rest and with each took I was captivated even more. It was an amazing experience, which was cool since we read the last two books in our book club, so I got to share that with my friends.
