First, after watching the movie several times, the time it takes to travel between Earth and Vulcan is still unclear to me. Obviously they are near neighbors in the galaxy, but at warp how long does the trip really take

Great explanation of distance/the fact that Trek XI more or less glazes over the distance from Earth to Vulcan (heheh) is in this post. I'm still not sure that the movie actually wants us to believe that it takes about three days, cause I'm not sure when it's happening that Chekov announces that they're gonna get there in something like seven minutes.
I wrestled with the Earth defenses thing for a Pike story I wrote. I wondered--what were the "codes" for, and is the memory of a starship captain really the best place to store them

In-system defense forces seem to be some sort of single-pilot fighters, probably without warp drives. In the 24th Century, we see the Borg blow up several in-system ships launching from Saturn. We also see academy students practicing their piloting skills in single-pilot impulse only craft around Jupiter.
Don't forget, their Terran system also has a habited Luna and Mars to protect.
Coincidental that the Enterprise in this film warp-jumps then hides itself in the atmosphere of one of Saturn's moons? I think not. You probably have to pass security around the gas giants to gain access to the inner rocky worlds of our system. And that's what the codes are for, to not set off the alarms.
