Questions: how long to Vulcan and what about Earth defenses?

First, after watching the movie several times, the time it takes to travel between Earth and Vulcan is still unclear to me. Obviously they are near neighbors in the galaxy, but at warp how long does the trip really take?

When the fleet first left for Vulcan, I was under the impression that Kirk was only sedated in the sickbay for 2-3 hours, hence the transit time was only 2-3 hours. Was I wrong? Was Kirk unconscious longer than that?

Because later when the Narada left Vulcan space for Earth, it seemed to take at least 5-6 hours, if not most of a day. Hence my confusion. Just how long is the trip when traveling at warp?

Second: What about Earth's defenses when the Narada arrived? The film didn't show the Narada encountering any Earth-based defenses, but I find it hard to believe that Earth would remain defenseless. Do you think we are intended to believe that the brain-worm thing he used on Pike successfully forced Pike to reveal codes that allowed the Narada to remotely disable Earth defenses? Or should we assume the Narada blew away Earth defenses as easily as it did the 6 starships it destroyed? Or a combination of the two?

I'm just curious about other peoples opinions on the subject.
