I like how you work through Kirk's chain of thought and experience here, carefully and plausibly. The insight that it was the friendship with him that made the difference in Spock is quite true, and it's really persuasive that this would be a pivotal insight for young Kirk, changing his attitude toward Spock. And the ending strikes just the right note

Thanks, I was going for a hopeful ending, one that could go either way with the relationship potential.

I'm not sure if this was your intention, but Kirk's train of thought sounds exactly like he's in denial. Denial about the possibility of being attracted to a man, denial about being in love, whatever. I'm queer, and when I was fourteen and hadn't yet come out to myself, my train of thought followed that path almost exactly. I predict a sequel in which Kirk reverses his earnest assertions that he would "never even consider..."

That was what I was going for yes, and I may or may not write that sequel.

I love the little series you have going here! I have to admit I never really watched TOS - is the mental link between Kirk and Spock canon or fanon?

Glad you liked it! is the mental link between Kirk and Spock canon or fanon? A bit of both. It's implied in the series, but never directly stated, but most fanfiction takes it as fact.

Can I ask how it's implied? Sorry for all the questions!

Just sometimes they seem to be aware of each other when there's no reason for them to be, is all. It's been awhile since I watched the series, so I can't think of a specific example.

Aw! I absolutely love how you have Kirk work through all of that mentally, trying to get a feel for how things *are* vs. how things *were*, and deciding that they could at least be friends. :)

*grin* Yeah, given how they met in this timeline they'll need to become friends before anything else happens.
