I love the little series you have going here! I have to admit I never really watched TOS - is the mental link between Kirk and Spock canon or fanon?

Glad you liked it! is the mental link between Kirk and Spock canon or fanon? A bit of both. It's implied in the series, but never directly stated, but most fanfiction takes it as fact.

Can I ask how it's implied? Sorry for all the questions!

Just sometimes they seem to be aware of each other when there's no reason for them to be, is all. It's been awhile since I watched the series, so I can't think of a specific example.

I thought of one. It's from the novelization of TMP, but it was written by Gene Roddenberry, so AFAIC it's canon, where Spock picks up Kirk's thoughts when he's on Vulcan.

Okay. Are they both on Vulcan at the time? And does it work both ways - can Kirk sense or pick up Spock's thoughts?

I don't want to hog the thread so if you'd rather take this to email that's fine with me!

Don't worry about it. No, at the time Kirk's on Earth, so it's a pretty strong indication of at least a one way link. They never mentioned Kirk being able to pick up Spock's thoughts as such, as far as I can remember.

Ohhhh. That's cool. Does Kirk realize that Spock 'sensed' his thoughts?

There's a scene later (in the novel, they didn't put it in the movie, bleh) where Spock brings it up, and is very uncomfortable, since he's been trying to get as far away from Kirk, Starfleet and his own humanity as possible.
