Front Gardening

I figured I would take advantage of the slightly cooler evening air (93 right now, high was 102), and whack some weeds that had grown in my flower beds. One bed I had to pull them out by hand, since they were embedded in my verbena ground cover. Nasty grasses with heads. They are gone now, and I see that they did not grow where the newspaper had been laid, but grew up to and under the main verbena plants themselves where I had not put in any paper. So, tomorrow morning, when it will be a little cooler (expected high only 98) I will be putting down more newspaper, and laying in some compost or bark to help cover it all, and give the verbena some nutrients.

The other weeds Rob whacked by machine, since they are around established bushes. I will have to hand weed some of those later, but at least they aren't towering 5' tall like my neighbor's weeds are doing.

I've also got to figure out what to do in my main front flower bed. One spanish lavender likes its spot, so it will stay. The day lilly isn't happy in the shade of the tree, so it may get moved. I've got another day lilly waiting to be planted. The marigolds ended up dwarf (not expected), and are now pretty much done with, so they and the weeds will get chucked. Still not sure what to do with the other arm that is in part shade.
